'21 Ja'Marr Chase and '88 Eddie Brown

Here are Brown's numbers in '88 and Chase's numbers this year projected for a 16 game season

Brown.... 53 rec ... 1273 yds ... 24.0 avg ... 9 td
Chase.... 56 rec ... 1240 yds ... 22.1 avg ... 16 td

I don't have the full records from '88, but Bown had at least 9 receptions of 30+ yds including 5 of 60+.  He only had two games without a reception of at least 24 yds.

But the game has changed a lot since '88.  Back then there were 9 WRs who had at least 40 receptions and averaged 17+ yds per catch (including 4 who averaged at least 19).  Last year there were only 2 with 40 receptions and a 17 avg and zero with a 19 avg.

I really hope Chase keeps up this production. That would be incredible. A legitimate deep threat is something we haven't had in several years.

The game has changed alot since the 70s and 80s.

You had bigger downfield pass plays covering
40 or more yds. 
Guys like Stanley Morgan, Wesley Walker , Issac Curtis
Carlos Carson,  Roy Green, Anthony Carter, Roger Carr
Made 40 yd and more catches look normal.

Back to Eddie.Brown. Defenses had to fear the Bengals run game so much he was left single man
Coverage on the CB with one safety back.
Eddie was really good at tracking the ball down. 
I see Chase making more big plays this year but I think they might come on the YAC variety.
If anything defenses are taking notice of Chase through 2 games and now the safety is changing his depth. 
If thats the case then that should free up that 2nd stuff between LB and S.
Id like to see the Bengals come out in 12 personel
And get Chase to blow past the CB and hopefully
The safety is out of position to help out

Damn, those are some great numbers for Eddie back in the day when it was a running league...

I just want the fan base to understand that either selection of Sewell or Chase was correct.

Right now it’s kind of hard to say that given the number of hits and sacks, but many of those aren’t on the line. Chase fills a need this team hasn't had in years.

I can only search back to 1994, but here is a little perspective on this stat.

Brown had 5 receptions of at least 60 yards in one season ('88) with the Bengals.

AJ Green had 8 in 9 seasons.
Chad Johnson had 7 in 10 seasons.

Since 1994 only 2 Bengal QBs have had as many as 4 completions of 60+ yards in a season.

Carson Palmer in '06 ( Chad Johnson-2, Chris Henry-2)
Andy Dalton in '17 (Green-2, Mixon, Bernard)  looks like 2 of those were short passes with lots of YAC.

Those numbers are just a little bit off. He has 2 TDs in 2 games.

In '85 Brown won Offensive Rookie of the Year over some other WR named Jerry Rice.

Eddie Brown played in an era when CB;s could literally assault WR's after 5 yards. Eddie was great as a rookie in spite of it being toughr to pass the ball. Back then, the QB could also be killed without penalty.

A different era, so Chase does have a great shot at surpassing Brown's numbers. But Eddie did not have 2 very good WR's playing alongside him either.

Not many.  Dalton was top ten in the league in td passes over the 8 years Green played with him.  And he was a fairly accurate QB.

As far as I know Boomer invented the "empty hand" fake.

Before that QBs would stick the ball in the RBs gut then pull it out.  Boomer would hold the ball on his hip where the rushers could not see it and fake the handoff with his other empty hand.  That way the defenders saw his empty hand when he pulled it out and assumed the ball was in the RBs hands.
