Bring Newton in and he can be our QB sneak slash short yardage specialist. Plus between him and Burrow we'd be the talk of the town with they're gameday threads.

LOL on the game day thread. But in all seriousness, PBS only can accommodate so much drip. Pass on newton.

Yeah, but they would probably be too expensive. Sinking any more money into the backup QB spot than necessary is a bad idea IMO. Dalton and Fitz were paid $10M last season. Allen was $1.5M.

1) Don’t freak out if we don’t bring in another o line. I’d still like to bring Spain back to compete with Carman. If we don’t, we’ll be just fine. Worst case scenario we have one weak link on the line. Burrow can anticipate that, the coaches can game plan for that. They couldn’t last year with 60% of the line being incompetent. Best case scenario our talented 2nd year player is up for the challenge and we have no weak links on the line.
2) Don’t freak out if we draft a receiver early. Even the first round. I know some will probably blow a gasket but with the FA they just put up we don’t have any urgent needs. CB would be nice (still think we sign one more), DT depth, TE to develop, etc are all positions we will look for, but we’ll be fine without them if we go BPA.
We should probably get used to early WR draft picks in basically every single draft. Pay Burrow, pay Chase, the rest are probably going to have to go. Maybe even be traded before their last year to get picks in return. With as much 5 wide as we run, we should really have 4 reliable WR’s especially when you consider an injury to one (or two) of the top 3. Look at the rams last year. They got lucky OBJ was cut. With the contracts WR’s have signed we will struggle to fill any injury openings we have and can’t count on an all star to get cut right when we have an injury.
Also most rookies aren’t studs year one like the last two we got so time to develop will be nice. Based on the talent in this draft I’d target round 3 for the best WR value but if the right guy is there round 1-2 don’t freak out.
After this Free Agency where we got Cappa, Karras and La'el frickin' Collins there will be no need to freak out.
I like your thoughts as usual but I must add I would like to see a DT early and a Corner to boot in the Draft.
Lots of great ones to be had to keep our D tops and as far as I am concerned, besides our Kicker were the main reason we got to
the Superbowl. Keep this Defense tough and our Offense won't have to score as much. Still think we are going to be a top Offense
next year if not the best in the game the way they upgraded the OL. We will see but I love what we have done coming off a great
run for the entire thing where we only lost by 3 points in the big game.
Injuries always come into the picture though, we will see if we can stay as healthy this next season. We were a little blessed in this
aspect. But we still lost our starting RT and had numerous other injuries and still got to the big game. This says a lot about coaching.

Neither Dalton or fitz get 10m this year.
Let’s say burrow is out a game, against the Steelers.
How do you feel about Allen vs trubisky led Steelers?

Allen I put at 20%, fitz at 60%. This year that could be the difference between making and missing the playoffs.

I tend to believe this a deep WR draft. At 31, the Bengals need to still draft a player that can make a
Solid contribution on gameday.
If the Bengals draft a WR at 31,at best he is still the 4th WR on gameday unless he can.double as a kick returner. The Bengals can find a WR in RDs 3 and on back.
At 31 I think you have to think CB or even adding another edge pass rusher. With Watson in the North now you need to bring pass rushers in waves.
Behind Hendrickson and Hubbard who can you depend on to get to the.QB off the edge.?
Ossai we hope is that guy but Kareem is not
A true pass rusher. We need a 3rd pass rusher with
Some get off and burst. The Bengals didnt bring
In a edge rusher in FA like Hughes, Mack or Miller
So that tells me they are looking to add one via draft

I feel pretty good either way honestly. Just depends on which QB shows up. Biscuit doesn't scare me.
Allen had a bad game against the Stains with backups this year around him.
He had a good game the year before, a real good game. Yah never know, also we don't know if Fitzy fits Zac's Offense...

They aren't getting $1.5M, though. They will probably get quite a bit more than that and I am not paying a backup QB much more than that. It is simply not worth it. If the Bengals are on a one game razor wire to make the playoffs this season, there is significant problems with the team other than backup QB. This is a SB runner-up that just majorly improved their biggest weakness. On paper, this is one of the best teams in the league.

Same could be said for, just in the AFC:
Titans
Bills
Ravens
Browns
Chiefs
Broncos
Chargers

Just wait n see if the mistake on the lake keeps it's earned reputation as the QB bone orchard.. Paying the guy a gazillion bucks probably isn't going to make everyone else feel great to be in Cleveland for long..

Our backup QB situation is flakey. Most of us want an upgrade while the team sees him as the backup. In a small sample he had a descent 63.4 completion % and 82 rating on a bad team in 2020, last year's throw away game vs the Browns tells us little. He knows his role and the offense, with another guy they'd be stating over.
There are many guys that are better than him, but who are they getting for the same pay or a slight raise? Enter the ring chaser. Some like Fitz may sit through camp in hopes of a big QB going down with a poor backup (ironically) and getting a team to pay a premium once the money dries up by draft day. Somewhere between then though, you may get an old ring chaser to look at Allen and say they could beat him in camp and take less. They've stuck to Allen even through bad camps though, but we have never been so attractive.

I hope Carman proves all these haters wrong this year.. I really like the kid and he should be healthy going into the offseason and playing with a way better tackle and center beside him...

To the OP's points, yeah I agree that WR may come earlier than what we thought when the offseason started. Props to the FO that we're in this position. They should get a ring chasing 4th WR type in FA, but this is the time to prep a mid rounder that can develop for when we either lose Higgins or replace Boyd. The WR class is really lean in 2nd or 3rd types, so good value in the 3rd or 4th.
To the OL point, they'll sign a solid backup type, there are too many descent ones that will be looking for jobs and have to be a backup if they give it to one of the two pups. I don't see them signing that guard today, but they will be signed.

Let's say Burrow sprains an ankle and has to miss 4 games, and we go 0-4 with Allen.
That could drop us from an 12 win team to an 8 win team, missing the playoffs. Allen is that bad. He could easily go 0-4. At best you get 1 win from him.
Or say Burrow has to miss 2 games while we're fighting for the top seed. We go 0-2, lose the division on a tiebreaker and have to play a road playoff game instead of getting the #1 seed.
It's easy to say in March "meh, who needs a semi decent backup". Tunes will change awfully quickly if Burrow has to miss a few games and such a scenario plays out. Then we'll be wondering why we couldn't dish out $2-3 million more for a much better guy when we had the $ to do so.
Water under bridge though. They already brought back Allen. At least Joe is much better protected.

Heck even the Browns are taking backup QB seriously by getting Jacoby to stand in for Watson's suspensions. We should as well. I agree. Out of that list, we should get Dalton.

I was talking out the draft positions with a buddy and I was against going WR in Rd 1 and he said: "What if Olave is there?". I responded that you absolutely draft him, unless you get a crazy trade offer.
I don't like the idea of trading away the first round pick because of the value of a 5 year contract at a relatively low dollar amount.
There is absolutely a scenario where CBs, OTs, QBs, make a huge run and somehow a top 15 rated WR drops to them at 31.
I remember Lapham saying years ago that with a QB like Palmer (puke), you add a couple weapons for him each year in the draft. Burrow has to be even more needing of those weapons. Especially now that the line has stabilized.

They may draft someone but i don't see them signing anyone (Spain or anyone else) in FA.
I see no reason to not sign Spain at his current rate of contracts. If he’s still getting paid similarly to what he has been then he definitely should be brought back to compete and also be a versatile backup at the other positions as well.
Reiff I think is better but I believe he will want to start, will cost more and isn’t as durable as Spain has been.

With this OL we can rely on the running game much more than in the past which should take the ball out of Allen's hands.
We can still win games with Allen if Burrow misses a few IMO.
That is why these OL signing are so huge. Run the ball, takes pressure off of everybody including the Defense.
I understand your thoughts here, but really was Brandon Allen THAT bad in his career that there is no hope if he has to play
some snaps? I mean, he had a big game or two when Burrow went down his rookie season and we won a game with a terrible
OL and a worse Defense.
