Which is why we are not in a can't win scenaro, we are in a can't lose scenario. Screw his agent, he has to perform or retire or he will be playing for peanuts. And every year brings a whole new group of young safeties into the league looking to take his job.
But his agent might be saying “play hard but play safe and then just turn it on in the playoffs again,” and then Bates would half-ass the regular season again to avoid injury. It would hurt his chances for signing elsewhere next year but agents and players aren’t always the smartest in those things.

I don't think Jesse is stupid. He's getting bad advice, but he's smart enough to know if he wants to market himself elsewhere he has to play better. If he dogs it half the season again, no one is going to want him.

Kinda upset this holdout has lasted so long. Feel like it was the last thing we needed after last years team was dubbed by the media as selfless and having no drama.
But then again maybe this humanizes us, and helps us remember no matter how high we get on the team emotionally, the front office still has to take care of business

The media and fans opinions are useless on business issues. The Bengals offered Jesse what they think he's worth. The FO has been very good of late with player valuation. Bates will show up the last week of camp, get up to speed and play in the first game. It's business. The FO and players get that it is business. The media and fans clearly do not.
I frankly do not give one happy shyt what the media thinks, and neither should you.

Yep. He has to ball out this year to get paid next year. If he sits, teams will pick apart his inconsistent play in 2021, that and potentially not playing ball for 18 months would completely erode his value.
Also, just as a reminder, the one player that did sit out had already played on one franchise tag and got paid millions. Bates has only gotten paid on a 2nd round rookie contract. The odds of him being able to survive 18 months unemployed financially, is miniscule.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe I hope he signs, shows up for camp, and then, with how good Dax Hill and Anderson are looking in camp, we just trade him for an offensive lineman to give Burrow more protection because that's obviously the secret to our success.
I understand that the NFL is Not For Long, so players need to make money while they can, but that's exactly why he needed to sign the fair deal we offered him and needs to sign the tag.
He's playing a dangerous game with his career and money right now, IMCO.

Nice post Stewy, spot on. No one should give a damn what the media thinks, they are a joke.
All they want is click bait.

All true, this is it to a T honestly.

We will see, I blame the agent but in the end it is Bates decision on whether or not to sign the Tag.
Holding out against this FO just doesn't work, they don't budge. He should of signed the Tag already and then we could of
traded him earlier or kept him and worked on a deal he likes more after the season. Him holding out doesn't help him at all.
At least not in this situation with this FO.

David Ojabo signed his rookie deal leaving Jessie Bates as the lone holdout.

He gets to sit out all of training camp without any fines or penalties. I think that is worth a lot.

Okay, much less risk of injury sitting out and that I guess...
I would still rather be out there playing with my teammates after signing the top 3 Safety extension he was offered.
To each his own.

Bets on when Bates signs the franchise offer? I will take August 17th.
He's made his point by holding out. But there's nothing more of value for him and his career by holding out much longer. He's just hurting his value if he goes elsewhere. Teams pay attention to these things.

He isn't risking injury.
Dude doesn't need training camp. He knows how to play. As long as he is training and conditioning on his own I could care less if he's at training camp or not.

August 29th. Two days after the last preseason game. Gives him the 1 weeks and 6 practices before the first game of the season.

I am hopeful he does not get injured like Earl Thomas. Thomas was ticked off at the Seahawks, but contracts are a 2 way street. Bates is risking long term security by playing on the tag. Bates would blame the Bengals if he suffers a bad injury, but Bengals are paying him almost 13 million dollars in 2022.
There are tons of guys playing on the last year of a contract, Bates could have signed a contract, we know he was offered long term security, by he and hos agent chose to not accept.
I feel he will be signed and on the practice field no later than August 29th, our first game is not until September 11th so plenty of time to get in meetings and on field to get practice reps.
2024 may go on record as one of most underperforming teams in Bengal history. Bengal's FO has major work to do on defensive side of the ball. I say tag and trade Tee Higgins in 2025 to start with the rebuild.

Meanwhile Hill could get a foothold on the starting position. It just seems to me that Bates should get some reps in.

so Jessie was at the game tonight. Are we looking at a signed franchise tag sooner rather than later?

Didn't look like he knew how to play for most of last year... $13 million wasted on a one year rental that isn't gonna put us over the top. I can only speak for myself, but I'm over the Jesse Bates thing.
