WR/PR Trent Taylor

5'8", 180 lbs.  Ran a 4.63 at the combine.  You look at those numbers and you ask "How did a guy like that even get drafted in the NFL?"

Then you look at his college receiving stats.  Over his final 2 seasons at Louisiana Tech he had 225 receptions for 3085 yds and 21 tds.  So he had to be doing something right.

Then you see that not only did he make an NFL roster his rookie season, but only two other rookie WRs (Schuster and Cupp) had more receptions than Taylor's 43.  So, again, he must have been doing something right.

And, finally, his 9.3 career punt return average is top ten among active players (min 50 ret)

I am starting to like the guy a lot.

His career stats are odd. His numbers have gone down each of his 4 years playing and he didn't play at all in 2019. Hopefully he can buck the trend this season because I predict our offense will be on the field for longer drives with the improved OL and we can use fresh WRs a lot more than the last 2 seasons.

The 49ers two best receivers that year was an aging Pierre Garçon and Marquise Goodwin. Trent Taylor shouldn’t sniff the field unless it is a blowout.

Also, plenty of guys get drafter with this similar build. I’m not going to go through an exhaustive list, but guys like Julian Edelman (5-10, 198), small program, come to mind.

There is nothing to really “get excited” about here. I’m sure he is a fine football player, but would you take the over on him having 15 catches and/or 200 yards… on the season?

He's nothing special. Although he will always have a place in my heart catching that two point conversion in the AFC Championship game.

Need to look at his snap count by year and compare those numbers to them. I guarantee you he has seen a significant decrease in playing time over the years.

Actually i would like it better if he sees the feild very little.. If he is getting a large # of snaps it means Chase Higgins or Boyd is injured.

Just for clarification I am not predicting that Trent will break out and have a big season as an offensive weapon. I am just pointing out that he has better credentials than a lot of people want to give him credit for.

How many of you knew he was top 10 in punt return average?

Great post, Fred.  How many weight room warriors and underwear Olympics phenoms from Taylor's draft class are out of the league?  There are some very important qualities for success in any endeavor that can't be measured.  

Every NFL team has a few very good football players are not blessed with exceptional physical gifts.  They're just good at football.  Sometimes it comes down to who has the judgment and guts to catch a punt.  I think we're lucky to have TT.

I am starting to like the guy a lot.

I love Taylor because of his sure hands and his quickness.   Not speed, but quickness.  That is what makes him a viable threat as a slot WR, even at his relative diminutive size (and short arms leading to a small catch radius).

He ran the short shuttle in 4.01, and that is in some elite company.  Ja'Marr ran it in 3.98.  Short space quickness.  He reminds me a lot of Wes Welker, and that isn't bad company, either.

His short stature and short arms put at risk any ball that Burrow sails a bit that could be tipped and picked off, but overall, Taylor can help this team and get some snaps at slot WR when TB needs a break.

Interesting point, Hurst has underachieved especially as #1 pick but argument is he needs more reps etc.. Taylor as a backup had a solid rookie year with receptions vs. targets ... and has not been used that much after especially targets.... more time on the field I think he can produce...

2 inches taller and 20 lbs heavier may not seem like much when you are talking about O-linemen, but Julian Edleman is significantly bigger than Taylor.

Taylor is more like Andrew Hawkins (5'7", 175).  Hard to believe that little guy was the #2 WR on our '12 playoff team.

Any punt return specialist who is as sure-handed as Trent gets a "special" from me .  If a ball is catchable, Trent will catch it. If he had been the punt returner in the SF game last season we would have had an additional win.  

Plus, Trent and I grew up in the same hometown in SE KY.  I watched him play pee wee football and played baseball with his dad.  So there !!!  He's special ...  lol

I predict the opposite actually. I think our points per possession will rise along with our points per play.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we lead the year in points per minute
