With Tee Higgins injured one of these three receivers will have to rise to the occasion and make some plays. Right now it’s relatively easy to simultaneously lock down Ja’Marr Chase and Tyler Boyd; Zac Taylor needs to be coaching these three guys up this week because if Michael Thomas, Stanley Morgan, or Trent Taylor can become a serious receiving threat then this frees up Boyd and Chase.
Yes, Hayden Hurst is a great receiving tight end but he’s not a deep threat.
Getting the run game going will help too; if the run game is successful then a defense has to pull the safeties in closer which means the two high safety defense can be abandoned. This opens up chances to complete the deep ball — but a surehanded receiver needs to be there.

Why would they bother wasting time with extra coaching for 3 backups when they could spend that time planning and implimenting better plays for their starters?

This is a great point — but as predictable as the current Bengals’ route trees are it makes sense to overwhelm the secondary with more deep threats than they can cover.
If the Bengals already had a wide open offense you would be absolutely right — and I wouldn’t have made this thread. I had no idea how crucial Tee Higgins was to this offense — until he wasn’t there.

i think what is more concerning is the lack of targets Boyd is getting.. Burrow had him at least 3 times last week and passed, we need at least double his targets to 10.

We letting the Bengals off the hook...The Bengals just need Thomas, Taylor, or Morgan to be just as good as other teams number 3 receiver, as they scheme against the defense and call plays that work for their players...
If Tee is out it shouldn't matter, having a Tee is a luxury, it should not be detrimental cuz other teams don't have 3 number one type receivers and they do just fine!

I agree Hurst isn't a deep threat, but neither are Thomas, Morgan and Taylor. Against these shell cover 2 deep defenses a deep threat doesn't matter. Joe has to do a better job of finding the right guy and doing it on time.

Yep! It's not only us noticing that Boyd is out there for the taking and not getting targeted - Elise Jesse and James Rapien made the same observation. And Zac even said this week they have to work Boyd into the offense more.

Dink and dunk Taylor, Boyd, Hurst.
Then bomb Chase once every other set of downs.
