You have to consider what this would signal to other teams.
Keeping Dalton on IR and "week to week" gives defensive coordinators more Headaches than AJ McCarron.

This is great news but on the other side of it, say Dalton does return for the playoffs you don't know how accurate his throwing will be with his thumb. I seriously doubt he will be fully healed by then and the thumb is so essential for a QB. I hope he does heal quickly but really hope AJ steps up and takes this team over.

I hope I am wrong, but I am hoping we keep our efforts in preparing AJ for the rest of the season... Simply put Andy will not be the same this year and going into the playoffs. He just wont.

The doctor that was discussing this on NFL radio said the closer to the tip, the faster he can return, the closer to the base the longer it will take to heal. Taking snaps and handing off the ball will be painful, and if he can't get grip strength on the ball his passes will sail (read interceptions). If we have any chance at all of going all the way, Hill I going to have to stop dancing and start pounding the ball, Bernard will also have to step up. And the defense will have to be dominant and not disappear.

Well according to Marvin it was best case scenario and he also said week to week. I'm not buying that this will end his season including the playoffs. In the end nobody knows and for us to speculate is just flat out dumb. I'm going based off what Marvin and/or Dalton tell us.

The tip of his thumb was out of the cast so maybe closer to the base?... Someone on pft brought up strength. I've been lucky to never have broke a broke a bone but how much strength will he lose in his arm if it's in a cast for 4 weeks?

I would be stoked to see AD come back - but what type of extra strain an does this place on the O-team? Do they need to learn to adapt to 2 diff sets of plays and rhythms and styles?

Does anyone know what hand specialist the team uses? Their team doctors all come from Cincinnati Sports Medicine and they don't have a hand specialist on staff.

Bullet dodged....season not lost. This should also motivate the whole team to rally knowing Andy will be back for playoffs.

Where the fracture is will be the main thing that determines how fast he will return. It can be in the upper finger bone, or lower finger bone and heal at the same rate. But more muscles from the "meaty" part of your palm attach to the lower finger bone than the upper....meaning the lower bone has more to do with grip. I havent heard (and doubt we will hear) which bone was fractured and how badly. The fact that he does not need surgery is big. It means the fracture is not affecting the stability of the joint and doesnt require pins inserted to stabilize. But with proper nutrition and the use of bone stimulators, the crack should heal relatively quickly. Now its just the matter of how long, and how it affects his grip.

Rich Gannon said the first thing they will do is get him a ball of putty to start working it...

I don't know, but I would guess they ran him down here to Jewish Hospital in Louisville, as the hand surgeons here are the best in the world, and were the first to do a hand transplant. Since it's only 45 minutes from Cincy..that's my guess.

How fast are you driving to get to Louisville in 45 minutes?
Cincinnati also has top level hand surgeons so I doubt they sent him to Louisville esp considering Andy doesn't need a hand transplant.

I agree, we need to finish 13-3 and put ourselves in the best position to have that bye. Not only would Dalton get that extra week to heal, but there's a chance Pittsburgh could get ousted in the 1st round with that defense. That way we won't have to face that nightmare again. We def have the talent to compete and beat Pittsburgh, but they're just bad mojo. I'd rather not have to deal with them until next season.

Favre's got hooked on pain killers because of a car accident in college.

Sending a guy to IR frees up the needed roster spot for the replacement, otherwise you have to cut depth from another position. Marvin isn't going to risk cutting a guy who he needs in order to add someone off the street when a guy isn't going to be able to return. So if he is not on IR, it is because there is actual belief that he can play again this season.

That was Jim Miller, I was intently listening to that as well. He didn't feel that Andy will be able to return, based off of his own experience with a fractured thumb and talked at depth about how much strength is lost while it is in a cast.
