DT Type

Very simple concept.

Would you rather Bengals be looking at:

3T to increase pass rush. i.e. Kancey

NT to spell and be heir apparent for Reader. i.e. Benton/Ika/Dexter.

FWIW, I'm leaning towards NT. We have DJ on that high cost contract that needs replaced sooner rather than later and would be able to maximize his reps with time to breath and not depend on Tupou. We already have Carter to do that for Hill.

It’s a passing league, and the Bengals should be playing with a lead more often than not. Give me Kancey, and draft/sign some rotational NT depth later.
Through 2023

Mike Brown’s Owner/GM record: 32 years  223-303-4  .419 winning pct.
Playoff Record:  5-9, .357 winning pct.
Zac Taylor coaching record, reg. season:  37-44-1. .455 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-2, .714 winning pct.

we have a glaring need for pass rush...Kancey all day. We can easily find a huge run stuffer in draft or FA.

Question with Kancey is can he play more than one down?

Bigger fear, you have both Kancey and Trey there and they run for 50 yards as both are mainly PR specialists.

Bengals need more interior pass rush.
Period.

The Bengals have good run defenders in Reader, Hill, and Tupou.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: 3-5 so far. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Tupou is a free agent I'm sure he will be back though. Reader is coming up on the last year of his deal and will be turning 30. It wouldn't suprise me if they go say a Mazi Smith at the end of round 2. The Bengals defensive line has alot of money in it.

I'd prefer the NT (Ika) if choosing a DT/NT - knowing that Reader is going into the last year on his contract. With that said, if they extend Reader for another year or two, that would change my opinion. It is a passing league but many teams try to keep Bengals offense on the sideline with long drives in which they rely heavily on the run (recent example - playoff game vs Ravens).

But it all depends on what the Bengals do in free agency. Such an interesting off season - so many different routes they could go with free agency and the draft. I don't know which positions they'll hit in the draft but assuming picks will likely line up with either positions in which they lost a starter this off season or line up with a position which has a player with a big contract entering the final year of their contract (Reader, Mixon, Boyd, Jonah and maybe Chido). Hitting on 2 or 3 future starters from this draft would be huge

I would be happy with that, he's a well rounded defender that is tough against the run and can push the pocket.

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

As to NT, I was very impressed with Tufele. We have him for 1M per the next 2 seasons.

As to 3T, BJ Hill is fine and they are not giving up on Carter who did show improvement.

I'm not against drafting an interior player but he better be extra special if taken early.

Dline is the position group we have spent the most money and are #2 in the NFL in spending on the dline.

This guy!

In all honesty the Bengals should draft both a 3 and a Nose!

That was my general line of thought. We have Readers contract (I think still highest for a NT) and I'm not saying he hasn't been worth it but we have to start trimming high cost contracts back to pay the offensive trio. If we could get a high caliber NT to replace Reader and have them experienced before taking over, would be a huge boon.

At least with the 3T, we have Hill and Carter to rotate in and out. Carter started to come along at the end this year.

Correct, they probably won't keep so much $$ in the DL moving forward.
I hope Tupou is back, I like him at NT.
I can understand getting another NT to eventually replace Reader, but I don't know if it's something needed this year. The Bengals could wait until the following draft. If you like a player but think he needs a year to groom though, I can understand that.
