Or maybe they think releasing fringe guys earlier gives them a better shot to catch on elsewhere?

Basham earlier fits the mold, but today is today. I don't get why they just don't out the roster all at 9nce instead of the dribble-dribble. Is there a practical reason?

The idea is that the offense can at least get out to the 40-50 yard line so control and hang time are more important than booming it. I wonder if on a punt we need distance on Money Mac has any familiarity with punting? He has the leg to blast not after all.

We were backed up inside the 10 yard line twice and had Robbins punt.  He couldnt get the ball over the 50 yard line either of those times unless you count the kick that was so short the return guy couldnt get to it so it bounced and rolled 15 yards.  Robbins was pretty bad.  If you didnt like the way Chrisman kicked the ball short against Kansas City last year, you are probably not going to like Robbins and his kicks this year.

Now go back and reread my post. He is a specific type of punter and punting from inside his own 10 is not his forte. Crisman's blown punt was not a short punt it was supposed to be directional away from the returner and instead Crisman kicked it right to the returner.

What the coaching staff may be doing is bringing in these guys in one by one so the coaching staff can talk to them thanking them for being part of the team and letting each of these guys know they are going to be cut instead of just posting a list like you would see for who made the High School play.  As each of these guys get released, you then get the news.  I dont know if this is the case. Im just making a guess something like this could be happening

Fringe uncut: Evans, T. Williams, Morgan, Wilcox, Hudson, Smith, T. Hill, Ford, Gunter, D. Davis, S. Jones.

Deep fringe uncut: Jackson, B. Brown, Gilliam, Kirkland.

I don't think anyone else has a realistic shot or even a long shot.

I'm not sure you understand punting. The reason they even started timing the 40, is that is the average time it takes players to cover the distance of a punt. If you punt the ball 80 yards down the field, all you are doing is setting up a huge return.

bengals will likely release their list when its all done.   we are just likely hearing from individuals as they go.

That makes sense.

Though I kind of assumed they'd do that before a list was posted. But it makes sense. Especially starting with the guys who ALMOST made it & you might eant on the PS

Chrisman can boom it 50+ with good hangtime, so could Huber.

Robbins' issue is length: he can't boom it and his only punt over 45 I think it was, was because it rolled a bunch of yards.

A double entendre (of sorts), as I'm sure that moustache is itchy.

No I read your post correct.  Im just pointing out if you dont like short punts and field position Robbins is going to be a disappointment.  If your team has to be at midfield before the punter can do anything, he isnt much of a punter.

A 40 yard punt with 5 seconds of hang time is a fantastic weapon, as your coverage team is already surrounding the return man, likely resulting in a fair catch.  40 yard put + no return > 50 yard punt - 15 yard return.

Wait, so we need “specialist” punters now? If the guy you have blows ass in certain situations, you don’t have the right guy.

Wasting a pick on that dude was a horrible idea. There are plenty of undrafted guys who are much better than this little specialist we have.

True but how often do we plan to get pinned deep with this offense.

Yes, Chrisman did have some great punts during the season and he had a 61-yarder during preseason that had good hangtime, ended up inside the 20, and was not returnable. There was a game or two during last season when he got some votes on this board for player of the game. But he also had 38-yarder during preseason this year that looked bad and that critical and unfortunately memorable poor punt in the last punt of the season last year.

Robbins is an unknown quantity on the NFL level and did not have a great preseason. But  I'm assuming the coaches saw enough in practice that, combined with a good college career as a directional punter, gave him the edge over Chrisman. I suspect it may have been close. Since Chrisman did a good job of holding for McPherson, then I assume the Bengals are confident in Chrisman's replacement at holder.

For sure. That has been the norm under ZT. I think most folks had them all making it by the end of camp.

That's why I feel he should be brought back on PS.
