Analysis TB Preseason Game
#41
Jenkins 29 pff grade I knew he looked bad but wow.

Mims 62.9 obviously a small sample size.

What does Chase, Tee, Yoshi, Irwin, and Jone have to do with Pryor, Jackson and Lassiter having more targets/playing time than Burton?

Now the other guy who brought up his injury being a potential reason, was an actual answer, not a sarcastic remark.

It was certainly a good question to point out after the game. While as it stands right now our WRs seem set I would imagine Irwin will be the odd man out on game days as not being active. While he is clutch Burton gives you more explosive potential. So you would want to see more from him earlier and i would expect to next week. Even another possible reason for the late play is to get him extra confidence going against some scrubs. Or even that the other receivers you mentioned will hopefully not be counted on during the season as wideouts there ability on that role will certainly be weighed along with special teams play. So you want to see more from them in those roles.

For what it's worth here is some OL PFF - take it with a grain of salt of course.

OBJr - 81.6
Volson - 80.1
Lee - 80.1
Karras - 76.8
Mims - 69.4
Cappa - 62.8

And somehow.....Carman - 56.8 (same as Trey Hill).

Nice thanks. What about the Dline? I know Jenkins was low 29 and with a 60 something in pass rush. But curious what Carters score was.

I will be shocked if he is not cut.

As for positives, Higgins, Burrow, Irwin and the 1st team OL with Mims at RT was solid, albeit 1 drive, but looked good. The problem our running game push and opening holes was not there all night.

Our defense played a lot of vanilla coverage and seldom blitzed. Newton made a great play. Overall, I have concerns with our defense, but with no Hubbard and no Trey, not sure Rankins played or played much so 3 huge pieces so hard to tell.

On to next week of practice and next preseason game.

Forgot to mention Yoshi and Burton also looked good.

The negatives I saw...

Evans as you said looked slow, Carman was a walking penalty and the refs missed the PI on Hakeem Butler late and it was inexcusable.

The DT's didn't play very well in this one, but it is early and Rankins and BJ Hill didn't play pretty sure.

The rest was pretty positive. The OL gave Burrow time early, Tee and Yoshi looked great. Mims looks like a fantastic pick, Jermaine Burton
shown that explosiveness late and I think he deserves more shots with the 1's as he is our most talented WR besides Ja'Marr IMO.

McLachlan shown some good things, same with Hudson at TE. Elijah Collins I really liked on a couple plays especially on the one catch and
run for 20 plus yards. Evans I am hoping is the odd RB out and either Collins takes his spot or we add a talented RB on cut day.

On Defense Fig Newton had the nice interception and Dax nearly had another. Myles Murphy had some nice pressures, I think Murphy is
really going to break out this year. Ossai had a couple pressures as well. Gunter looked good and so did Cedric Johnson. Hoping our DT's
play much better against the Bears, specifically Kris Jenkins. Need McKinnley to get healthy as well but overall it was what you want to see
in a preseason game, no bad injuries and we played well on Offense and Defense with mostly starters early.

Oh yeah, shout out to Njonmeta or whatever his name is. He was all over the place at LB. Bell #53 the DT was the only DT that impressed
me in this one, a nice Sack followed up by a nice run stop. But right after that he got a neutral zone infraction lol

Rehkow averaged 56 yards on his 3 kicks and Robbins averaged 50. Rehkow did have one go into the endzone, but it was close, hitting at the 2 yard line. Robbins had one inside the 20. I think they had enough hangtime, although there were short returns on 4 of the 6 kicks.

Yeah, I thought Robbins looked better and Rehkow shown he has a big leg and he is just a big dude. I think we are better off at Punter
this year, but that isn't saying much just yet.

I'm not saying this should happen but Dax Hill played himself into a possible trade candidate especially if the Bengals look to add to the DT room.

The game went pretty much as I thought it would. The starters looked very good, the 2nd year players looked to have put in the work over the offseason. The score didn't matter because there isn't really a game plan. It's more situational football to see how the younger guys react in situations. I do think we will see improvement from these guys next game.

I thought Jenkins played pretty well when he wasn't double teamed.  DJ Reader was very unique in his ability to stand up 2 blockers.

I watched the first series on Offense and the first series on Defense. IDk if we won or lost.

My thoughts:

Why no Zach Moss (at least he wasn't out there with the starters)

Tee is ready

Our LBs are possibly the best Off-ball duo in the league.

Yeah, Jenkins at this point in his career is not yet able to prosper if his fellow DT is just a body so to speak.

Yes, Dax Hill looked good man. He can be a #2 Corner easily from little we saw in this game. Good in coverage and is a very physical Corner
with top speed and length to match. I honestly don't want to trade him now though.

Think the same.

Zach Carter started next to Jenkins and honestly was the worst player and it didn't surprise me none. Think this was Carter's last shot.

Zack Moss was sick I guess. True on our Linebackers, they looked really good early, specifically our starters in Logan and Germaine.

Nice seeing what we thought we had at LB for years to come. Last year communication on the backend was clearly a huge problem.

We really need this year's DT class to hit. It's been 14 years since the Bengals drafted a good defensive tackle and that was Geno Atkins. The only other one anyone could make an argument since Geno is Andrew Billings who wasn't good in Cincy.

McLachlan..I have watched his videos from college and as you saw briefly last night when he catches a ball and runs he looks like Gronk..Hope they give the guy more looks..Love Woodside

My initial thought was he looked like he was running in sludge on the good return that got called back.

Completely agree Synric. Need to hit on Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson. I know it will take a little time but Zach Carter has had his
chance in my opinion and this was his last shot. I doubt he starts next to Kris Jenkins against the Bears after this pathetic showing. The
DT that showed the best to me was Travis Bell #53 in this last game. Sack and a couple nice run stops.

I like McLachlan but runs like Gronk? That means lumbering giant TE, not exactly what I see with McLachlan.

He shown some good things though for sure and can block and catch, same with Erick All but I think All is more talented and is younger.

Sure didn't look like Evans used to look that is for sure. He was always fast and that was his strength along with his hands. Losing one of
your strengths is never a good sign. I liked what I saw of Trayveon much more on returns and Elijah Collins also shown some good stuff as
a runner and as a pass catcher. I think Evans gets cut after seeing him last night.
