Lance McAlister - Burrow showing resignation

My State of the Cincinnati Bengals

Did you watch Joe Burrow’s postgame news conference Sunday? Did you read his face and listen to his word choice? I did. What I saw and heard was frustration and disappointment. But most alarming, I heard resignation.

This organization was gifted Burrow. They did nothing to earn/or qualify to draft him …..other than lose.

With a gift like Joe comes a responsibility to support him, not use him.

This organization is failing him.

Consider what he’s been surrounded by since Day 1.

A head coach that will never again be hired as an NFL head coach. Anywhere. Anytime.

A GM that will never again be hired as an NFL GM. Anywhere. Anytime.

An owner that no fan base/city would ever want. Anywhere. Anytime.

In Sunday’s postgame, Joe mentioned the need for everyone to take responsibility for what’s going on.

Zac owns things. The problem is he keeps having to own things because he continues screwing things up. This team once desperately needed Zac’s culture creating ways. These days they desperately need a head coach.

And while Rome burns, the owner and GM are nowhere to be found. They never talk publicly during the season. Why? Well, it’s just not how they do things.

The GM and his band of six scouts continue to offer the coach more draft misses than hits. They’ve run out of the Top 5 draft currency for the easy picks like Burrow and JaMarr Chase.

Good players eventually get big contracts. That requires an owner's willingness to keep spending in order to keep winning. See Jessie Bates. See DJ Reader. See Tee Higgins.

It’s too late to save this season. No team that’s 0-4 at home, 3-5 overall, winners vs the Browns, Panthers and Giants, but losers to anyone good, is suddenly going to win 7 of its next 9.

Tick, tick, tick. Hear that? That’s the clock ticking on Joe’s time in Cincinnati and his career. It’s also the timer running out on fan patience and goodwill.

I see it. You see it. I think Joe is seeing it.

The organization knows it. But they got their franchise QB. They’ve left the rest up to him.

Admit it, you can’t help feeling queasy wondering if the Burrow contract, and stuff like the Ring of Honor and Ruler of the Jungle is just the equivalent of the Votto contract, bobbleheads and statues for the Reds. Shiny objects meant to pacify and distract. And that’s it.

Burrow’s having the best season of his career. He’s the top rated QB in the NFL.

The Bengals are now closer to a rebuild than the Super Bowl.

Buckle up. It’s going to get worse….and I can’t complete the thought with ‘before it gets better’

Higgins won’t be here next year. Heck, what if Ja’Marr Chase doesn’t want to be here next year?

Shame on this organization.
just stop man..this team has been to a Superbowl, conference championships game etc two out of the past three years ..Burrow was tired and pissed off after that loss like any other player would be..you are fabricating thoughts in your own head about everyone and everything due to your own disappointment this year. and are painfully incorrect about most of the things you have said.....and by the way  there are dozens of cities that would love an NFL Franchise regardless of the ownership

And in Baltimore’s case John Harbaugh has already won a Super Bowl. Probably would have more than one by now if his MVP QB didn’t turn into Andy Dalton every January.

The Bills have underachieved in the playoffs, and I’m sure deep down many of their fans have to wonder if McDermott is really the guy to win it all for them. Especially after 13 seconds.

At the end of the day Zac Taylor sucked into landing both Burrow and Chase, and then proceeded to ride the two of them, an opportunistic defense, and a kicker who went 19/19 in the playoffs to a Super Bowl. Cool. It was super fun. But that was 3 seasons ago now which in NFL years is an eternity. The fact is he’s a sub 500 coach who never has his team ready to start the season, and is about to miss the playoffs for a 2nd straight year (despite having a 4th place schedule). Probably looking at another last place finish too now that Cleveland isn’t hampered with Watson anymore.

belichick was a sub .500 coach his first five years..

This is what stuck out to me.

Bengals technically should be able to afford a couple more losses before being "out of it," but what's the likelihood of going 7-2 after seeing the product on the field in the first 8 games?

It's possible they turn things around, but I think as each week goes by, more and more fans are getting into this "Time for next year" mindset.

Fielding a great team through FA is going to get even harder from here on out, especially if they sign Chase to a mega deal.
Improving the scouting department and coaching staff to better identify players and coach them up will be critical in the coming few years to get back into the contender category.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: 3-5 so far. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. We're going to read into a singular player's emotional state in a press conference that happened immediately after a disappointing loss. Ok. So, I guess if Burrow comes out in today's presser being optimistic, we're just going to ignore and continue to harp on what McAllister "heard" on Sunday? Whatever.  Whatever

So I'm going to guess you think the Ravens should get rid of Lamar Jackson?

Eventually, but how many teams would kill to have an AFC Championship, 2 AFCCGs, a Super Bowl and two division titles in 5 years?
One year that is not going well and everyone wants to jump ship. (I'm not counting last year when he got hurt)

It’s a what have you done for me lately type of league, and Taylor is about to miss the playoffs for two consecutive years. That’s enough to get most coaches fired. Especially when they already have a franchise QB in place.

Seriously you are going to go there? Two whole years when we finished last season with Browning and almost made it and this year isn't written yet? Facepalm

Depends.  I'm not getting 2010 vibes from this year, but it does feel a little like 2009.

It’s like people bringing up Brady being a 6th rounder. They’re called OUTLIERS.

Marvin Lewis has a winning record as a head coach of the Bengals. And yet, most of us wanted him replaced a couple-to-a-few years before he finally was. Why? Because he couldn't win in the playoffs. And now you have people wishing his replacement to be replaced. Why? Because after 3 straight winning seasons and a playoff record of 5-2, he's started off 3-5? I am EXTREMELY glad that none of us are in charge of this football team.

Burrow's not going anywhere, neither is Chase. MacAllister is a drama queen trying to generate clicks

I understand that. Most folks don't run to the nearest news source to hear that everything is ok and totally going by the book.

That’s a weird correlation to make. Playoff struggles aside, Lamar is infinitely better at his job than Zac Taylor is at his. And a top 5 QB is a hell of a lot harder to upgrade from than almost any HC.

But but but, sled, he heard RESIGNATION in Burrow's voice!!! I wonder, did he hear that while Burrow was saying we certainly can win 7 out of 9 or whatever it was he said?

So, replace a guy who actually took us to a Super Bowl and followed that up with an AFCCG because we're starting off THIS season 3-5, but DON'T replace a guy who can't win in the playoffs. Ok.

Oh, and getting a good HC is really easy. Just look at the Bengals throughout the 90s. Rolleyes

Well we’re halfway through the book and it’s pretty terrible so far.

Meanwhile the Steelers go from Cowher to Tomlin, the Ravens go from Billick to Harbaugh. It’s almost like well run organizations hire the right coaches, draft the right players, etc. If only there was a job that existed where someone is in charge of all that. Ninja

In all fairness we have been hitting more OBJ hasn't been a problem at LT. Mims is looking like a stud on the right side. Tre might be best FA signing in entire NFL over last 10 years based off contract and production. My problem is more with Zac and our owners unwillingness to change

I'm old enough to remember when the entire core was going to take below market contracts in order to stick together lol.

It's not exactly breaking news that the Browns are cheap. The true irony in it though is, instead of just paying the piper at the first chance, they continue to kick the can down the road and between draft capital and below level replacements, end up paying more in the end then they would have originally. This already has applied to Jesse Bates and DJ Reader and will happen again with Higgins and Chase. Truly mind-boggling level of ineptitude from this front office.
