Possible Zac Taylor replacements
(11-22-2024, 03:25 PM)TJ528 Wrote: There's going to be a LOT of dissapointed people who think Zac Taylor and his staff will be let go at the seasons end.

The Brown family stuck with Marvin for 15 years.  Zac has 3 winning seasons out of 6 seasons and 3 out 5 since Burrow was drafted.

Taylor is staying put.  You might see a change at DC or OL, but I wouldn't expect wholesale changes.

This team isnt far away from being 11-6 instead of 6-11 this season, and the Browns and FO see that too.

Probably correct. I do see a lot of articles about replacing Zac but I highly doubt it happens. But seeing these articles gives me hope
that at the very least we see changes at DC and the trench coaches.

I mean playing devils advocate here, but can you really fire Lou since his DL was decimated with injuries and couldn't get pressure on the QB and allowed the other team to pick apart the defense?

I personally think it's time for a DC change and all out change in defensive philosophy.  However, if the Brown family and FO see it the way you see it and a lot of other fans on here see it that there were just too many injuries on this team to be successful then I'd guess you won't see many, if any changes in the off season.

He was the 5th highest ranked DC coming into this season......

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-ranking-top-10-defensive-coordinators-entering-2024

Quote:5. Lou Anarumo, Cincinnati Bengals

Anarumo ranked significantly higher on this list a year ago after a strong 2022 season. The 2023 campaign did not go as planned on either side of the ball for Cincinnati, and while the defense did face some injuries, such as losing D.J. Reader for the season, others underperformed, which resulted in a poor year for the unit.
Anarumo’s defense had improved in EPA per play allowed in each of his first four seasons in Cincinnati, but the group in 2023 recorded its lowest EPA per play allowed since 2020. The 0.02 EPA per play allowed in 2023 was the sixth-worst figure in the NFL.

I think he ran out of talent. That's not really his fault.

Whether it's your fault or not, as the DC, you can not allow teams to march through you.

Hell as a fan sitting there against Baltimore and Washington, you can't kick a FG because this defense can't stop the University of Cincinnati right now.

To be fair, I'm not sure if they can or not now either.  The defense has been historically bad period, and that falls on the DC, IMO.

I like Lou and think he's a good DC but his defense hasn't shown it in 2 years.

I was listening to 660am, New York, during the morning as the Jets-fans hosts commiserated over the Jets. They felt that the New York Jets had the worst owner in the NFL and as a result coaches like Ben Johnson and Belichick and other top candidates would never come to the Jets and they would be stuck with Rex Ryan. Sounds like, with the exception of Rex Ryan, it could have been a conversation on Cincinnati radio.

He's had a below average defense in 5 of his 6 years as a DC.

Need to fire Lou regardless of the injuries. We can give him a pass for the games where he had no DT's, but he has them now and he
is supposed to be a great secondary coach and the entire Defense besides Trey has let Burrow and the Offense down. We would be at
the very least .500 with even an okay Defense. Players have regressed under him, bad sign.

Fire Lou, Hobby and Pollack at the very least unless magic happens and this team wins out.

Yep, Lou has been a good DC in the Playoffs and specifically against the Chiefs and Bills but we need some consistency and physicality.

Tackling, coverage, communication are all poor and has just gotten worse.

It truly is crazy how much CBT has regressed this year.  Dude looks LOST.

Your right with all his DL back, this defense is still hemorrhaging points and yards.

Unfortunately, I see a possible 7 or 8 total wins for this team.

I wish it were only 4 or 5 so we'd pick in the Top 10.

Team needs a WR, DT, DE, IOL, TE in next draft badly.

CTB has probably been the biggest disappointment on D this year to me, I think he has just relied on his athleticism to this point though
as I agree, he looks lost out there. Fig Newton came in as a rookie and was a stabilizing force for us. If we lose to the stealers after the
bye I think the season is over and would like for us to lose out to get earlier picks and ensure we fire some coaches. Sad to say.

Nah. I think most Bengals fans know the Brown family won't do anything to Zac Taylor, no matter what happens this year. Wishful dreaming by some, but ask them to bet $1000 and almost all would say Taylor stays. People know I am not a Taylor fan, and I would be absolutely shocked if they canned him. Like "the most shocking thing they could have done in the past 25 years" shocked.
Like a teenage girl driving a Ferrari.

That's it in a nutshell. He's overrated as a DC IMO.

And Livingston.

I have seen nothing that tells me he is a good coach.

He goes somewhere, cleans out house, and just brings in a ton of mercenaries through the transfer portal drawn to his name (something he can't do in the NFL), and relies heavily on having arguably the best QB and WR in CFB. He doesn't really have a run game, his defenses suck, and he still loses a lot (12-11 at Colorado).

I also think he brings a lot of media/ego baggage and I question how well he could coach a bunch of millionaire adults as peers rather than children as their boss/controller of their destiny.

Couldn’t make me happier to see him lose.

Why would you get joy seeing someone else fail? Sanders is OK. He's not my cup of tea, but he is no worse than most other professional athletes. At least he showed spine enough to bench his son for the Championship game for breaking the rules just like he would the other players.

This being Anarumo's first full time NFL Coordinator position, he's given it a good effort, but I really do think that it's time for the team to make a change. Let's not forget that Lou was not Zac's first choice for DC, more like the 5th option.

Here's Lou's coaching resume for reference:

Wagner (1989)

Running backs coach
Syracuse (1990–1991)
Graduate assistant & assistant defensive backs coach
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (1992–1994)
Defensive coordinator & defensive backs coach
Harvard (1995–2000)
Assistant head coach/defensive backs/special teams
Marshall (2001–2003)
Defensive backs coach
Purdue (2004–2011)
Defensive backs coach
Miami Dolphins (2012–2017)
Defensive backs coach
Miami Dolphins (2015)
Interim defensive coordinator
New York Giants (2018)
Defensive backs coach
Cincinnati Bengals (2019–present)
Defensive coordinator

With the Bengals management always being completely willing to give coaches a long leash with which to prove themselves, it should not be difficult for them to attract a truly brilliant defensive mind to compliment Zac Taylors wide open offensive design.

And not Brian Kelly? BK is a nut case and has back stabbed every organization he ever worked for.

I don’t like Brian Kelly either, for leaving UC and Notre Dame before their bowls games. What a classless act, and he deserves everything he gets, including getting fired.
