Joe Burrow playing GM
#1
We've seen it before, elite athletes essentially "playing" GM. Lebron did it in the NBA, Aaron Rodgers has done it in the NFL. Stars almost holding their front office "hostage", making them sign players they are friends with or thinking they know what's best for the team through roster building input/control.

Burrow is essentially doing that with the Tee situation. He made the comment that Tee is a "need" and basically put the front office on notice.

Everyone has an opinion on the Tee situation, but it's certainly understandable if the Bengals were to let him go and reinvest the money saved by upgrading other areas of the team that are bigger needs - defense anyone? Some would say this is what they SHOULD do and its clear it's what they intended on doing.

Everyone is fired up Burrow is speaking out, but he's walking a fine line. People turned on Lebron for destroying some of the teams he's been on in the past through "passive" GMing. Whether it works out or not, Burrow is now going down the route of "passive" GM. I hope it doesn't come back to bite him.

We'll find out how much of a need that Higgins is when we see how much Burrow and Chase are willing to sacrifice to make the deal financially viable to the team, AND leaving enough to build the defense (again...).

Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations

Chase is a need. Tee is a want.

Ultimately, though, if Joe was going to exert influence to get Tee paid, why didn't it happen this year? Or last year?

I'm sure Joe wants to keep Tee, but this is also probably a case of, "if you're letting Tee go, you'd better..."

Higgins is a need for Joe Burrows stats..It would be border  criminal malfeasance to spend 20-25 million dollars for Higgins when we have some many other areas to address to make this team a winner again..There was not a person in Cincinnati more excited when we drafted Burrow..But I sure wish he would go back to his bluejeans and white t shirt days, re establish pocket awraeness  and make those clutch throws and keep his mouth zipped publically....sometimes we lose sight of the trees in the forest..WELL..we have Higgins and Chase..we have the Higgins that misses games due to a chronic hamstring problem..we have the Higgins that sometimes drops easy passes..and this team is what 4-8

This is the key to me.

It's borderline unfair to call and put pressure on the FO to get Tee signed, get as much money as you can (Joe and Chase), and then expect them to build a defense that is capable of winning a Super Bowl. You can't have it all.

Again, it remains to be seen how all of this plays out...but it has a chance to MASSIVELY backfire.

The problem with trusting the Bengals FO is they say they need money to extend people when it's their time, but when that time comes they don't extend them. We never go to the cap or over.....ever. How far were they under the cap in 21 and 22? We need money for Bates...they let him walk, we need money for Tee....they'll let him walk, we need money for Chase....now we need more money.

Every other elite offense in the league has a elite ground game to complement their elite passing game but us. 2G + a RB will win more games than I only play half the games WR2 TEE

Tee parting ways with his agent signals to me Tee is willing to be cooperative in all this. That’s an olive branch. So I’d say if they can all figure it out ( includes Chase and Joe) then let’s roll.
Romo “ so impressed with Zac ...1 of the best in the NFL… they are just fundamentally sound. Taylor the best winning % in the Playoffs of current coaches. Joe Burrow” Zac is the best head coach in the NFL & that gives me a lot of confidence." Taylor led the Bengals to their first playoff win since 1990, ending the longest active drought in the four major North American sports, en and appeared in Super Bowl LVI, the first since 1988.

he's gonna regret letting go of that agent. Theyre not gonna give Tee the money he wants. And it'd be really stupid for the bengals to give him money when the whole roster practically needs an overhaul.

Joe really did Tee a disservice here. This is gonna cost Tee money

What do we care about that? We just want to see the team win the Superbowl, right?

well if you want to win the super bowl, and 90% of the starting roster stinks, it doesnt make sense to put a bunch of money into an injury prone #2 receiver

Exactly what I was scrolling down to post.

Do you think Joe would rather have Tee, who's good but Joe knows he can make anyone look good opposite Chase, or a defense that doesn't force him to put up 63 points to win a game?

Let's stick with that line of reason, as we don't care if Tee has regrets about getting rid of his agent. He's made more this year than I'll likely have made in my lifetime. I just want to see a winner. But you're right, I've said since the beginning that the money needed to secure Higgins to a multi year deal is desperately needed in other areas of the team.

Which we will do not by spending all our cap space keeping the team as it's currently constructed. Burrow seems to love passing the ball, so when he plays GM he's going to focus on pass catchers. That's why you listen to what he wants/prefers, but also just be the responsible adult in the room as the coaches and tell him no, he needs to do something he doesn't prefer for the good of the team. This was also my response to everyone who always said "Burrow prefers it that way" when it came to empty backfields, playing nearly exclusively in shotgun, giving Trenton Irwin snaps and targets, etc. Just because a player prefers it that way doesn't mean that's the right call for what the team needs to win. The same as bringing in Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb wasn't the right call for the Jets despite their QB preferring them but nobody was willing to tell him no for the good of the team. That's why you have coaches to do the things that players might not prefer to do but need to be done. Heck, the Eagles players all hated doing the Tush Push, but it kept working so coaches kept calling it.

Offensively need to be able to run the ball, including running the ball from under center so we can have effective play action passes. Defensively we need to be at least competent. Even if Burrow would prefer to spend all the money on WRs.

We're simply not good enough drafting and our FO will never change enough to allow us to be consistently good enough at drafting to rely on so much of the team to be great young guys on rookie contracts. So we'll need to spend money on bringing in the talent.

hey, if you have a chance to make 27 million vs 19 million, youre gonna take the 27. Tee just basically did that to himself, and its still not a guarantee cincy signs him. And like we've said, the team will be worse off signing Tee
