I think about this whenever I see him playing for the Steelers. He's been reliably healthy at least. He's started what, 45 out of 50 possible games for them? His production is down somewhat both in terms of sacks and TFLs but he still is a contributor. OTOH that came at a cost of 3 years for $9 million per year. So it is at least possible we do better and find a higher bank for the buck player. I'm not sure we have though.

I mean it's pretty obvious when you go to the super bowl and afccg with a qb and two star wr on rookie deals that's when you go all in during free agency, not get ride of Bates and Reader and come back worse. Pretty simple

It's not so much that they moved on from those players, as much as doing very little in terms of replacing them with suitable talent.

I agree. The defense wasnt overly talented to begin with but then you let the better talent leave and replace it with lesser talent. Of course the defense is going to suffer and become worse because of this.
The same thing would apply to the offense. You cant lose talent from the offense and think the offense is going to be better because of it. We can use Higgins as the example. If he leaves, the offense is not going to be as good. You cant let talent like that leave and think there will be no drop off on offense. What you can do however if Tee leaves is take that money Tee would have made and bring in a couple of good guards which would make the offensive line better. You may lose in one area but gain in another. What the Bengals cant do is let Tee walk, bring in lesser talent at the WR position and do nothing else on offense.

I was just responding to the thread title. Holding on to players too long means multiple things, in tee’s case if we get nothing for him…held onto him too long. If Tobin has nothing to do with contract negotiations at all then I wonder what the comment “held onto players too long” means. He has no power to trade them anyway?
He held onto tee too long, he should have traded him at his highest value, but we can see he doesn’t have that skill, based on his own statement.

Do you know he was specifically talking about Tee? I remember him saying, you don't trade good players. I also personally know, you don't trade something if you're not going to get what you want for it.
