The bigger the FA contract, the bigger the risk
#1
Bengals are not the only team who have missed on FA's. I know everyone wants the big name guys, but so many cases of misses.

Ravens released safety Marcus Williams, who was benched midway through last season.

In 2022, Williams was Baltimore's top free agent addition, signing a five-year, $70M deal
. Three years later, Ravens have cut him after QBs recorded a passer rating of 148.4 when targeting him.

I know Troy Blackburn personally. I'll put in a good word for you

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

I believe in risk. I was just pointing out the Bengals are not the only team that swings and misses big.

It’s like we have our own personal Geoff Hobson here.

I wanted to be the clever one to make this comparison, but you beat me to it.  Hilarious

We have very little to end talent on the roster. That talent is largely concentrated on offense.

3 of our top 5 players are disgruntled.

Our drafts have been mediocre recently. Not producing quality starters.

The team needs an infusion of top end talent. This isnt a scenario where we have an elite roster that just needs role players. This is a mediocre roster that needs playmakers.

So what's the risk? Well there's speculation that Burrow hasn't been happy with the last 2 offseasons, and may seek a trade after next season. Would he? I personally doubt it, but why risk it.

Can anyone honestly say that this roster is Super Bowl quality?

Wink   I couldn't have said it more wittily (along with the Hobson post). I had thought maybe he already worked in the front office.

Free agency is the same every year. I don't think people want external free agents that are paid $20+ million a year.

There's a big gap between that and what we're doing.

You aren't going to convince people otherwise.

AND, IF the Bengals had Chase and Tee extended, and were working towards Hendrickson...it's more tolerable.

Maybe if Burrow was restructured.

Yes, there's a cap...but other teams are way more adept at using it all.

Exactly this.

You don't think Kevin Zeitler for a 1 year $9 million deal couldn't help this team? DreMont Jones on the same deal?

That's about as low risk/high upside as it gets.

Key is drafting well which we’ve been terrible at as of late so we need FA’s because we have so many holes and only 6 picks. With Chase , Higgins and maybe Hendrickson contracts looming I wasn’t expecting huge tier 1 FA’s signed. Some guys I wanted like Banks , Will Fries and Chase Young got crazy deals so I get that. However some of these other contracts like Zeitler and Levi Onwuzrike the Bengals should have been in on. Was hoping for some tier 2 type guys to fill out the roster similar to when we added Vonn Bell , Chiobe Awuzie along with some vets like Eli Apple.

Bengals can't even keep their own free agents. Throw in the shitshow of drafts, yeah, I feel great about the Bengals going forward because some other team's free agent fizzled out.

Would anyone have been mad if we gave Kevin Zeitler a 1 year, 10 million dollar contract?

I don't think the fan base is expecting Milton Williams level signings.

I think they just want the Bengals to sign people who would be good to quality starters at a position that we currently only have back ups on the roster.

There were some teams with Marvin that made the playoffs that had gap at I believe Middle Linebacker and Center. Yet, instead of signing one, we rolled cap money over each year.

People know this. It's the same thing every year.

We used to hear how teams like Washington always went out and signed the big name free agents and never won, etc.

Nope, but based on how Bengals let him walk after he played in 71 of 72 games in his first 5 years, maybe he rather finish his career elsewhere? I know I probably would for about same amount

The Bengals' "Played It Safe In Free Agency Champions" trophy case is already full enough.

Are we even taking swings? Especially big swings?
