I really don't know. Like I said, I'm just managing my expectations. If they sign him I'm certainly hoping for the best.

As someone who stares at spreadsheets and numbers all day, I find it mind blowing how risk adverse the Brown family operates their salary cap. They are so afraid of dead cap, they're willing to sacrifice their image to public, goodwill with the city, and their relationships with their current and former players. The truly ironic part of this approach is they have absolutely nothing to show for it. Going back the last ten seasons, here is where the Bengals rank in terms of least dead cap:

2015: 1
2016: 2
2017: 1
2018: 3
2019: 8
2020: 14
2021: 9
2022: 3
2023: 1
2024: 1

That's some dynasty level shit. It's just unfortunate for them those results haven't translated to the field. But hey, in the instance there is another global pandemic or another Great Depression, the Bengals are going to be prime suitors for that free agent class. Until then, they'll just continue to burn bridges with their fanbase and players. Joe sent a clear message this offseason. If this is the Blackburn response, this won't go unnoticed and good luck with the lease negotiations.

Am relieved about Becton. I think we have enough "big" guys who seem to be walking injury risks. Our bets at IOL have been losing at a steady clip. We need a non-sexy BJ Hill level player to take over one of the guard positons.

What is the delay with Jenkins?

Why hasn’t he signed with anyone (not just the Bengals) yet?

Is it his medicals given his injury history?

Good question.

I am guessing he feels he is top guard in FA left and is holding out for the money. One of the keys for the team signing him may be guaranteed money. It is extremely risky to pay an often injured player top money and guarantee a lot of it.

In time, we will find out.

Giants are desperate for a guard. They went all out for Fries and lost out to the Vikings. They have their sights, I have read, on Jenkins or Becton. Others also looking for a guard, like Patriots. I'm not confident the Bengals will win a competition for whichever free agent they have eyes on for the position.

I understand the other guys not having signed yet. Jenkins is expected to get the biggest contract of the remaining guards. He should therefore be the next domino to fall. His deal sets the table for the remaining guys. Once teams are out of the Jenkins race they will pivot to the other guys and will have the money put aside for Jenkins free to spend.

Hernandez won’t be signed yet because of injury.

But generally the longer a player waits the less money a team has to play around with. Maybe he’s waiting for a team to restructure one of their stars to free up cap space ?
My guess though is that he needs to be medically cleared first.

I am not confident either. If Pats want any guard, they are loaded with cap space and can outbid anyone. Giants are not loaded with cap space.

If a bidding war with Pats, we likely lose.

We have 20 million left in cap space. It is a myth we need restructures or new contracts NOW TO SPEND ON A FREE AGENT.

Also look at their Void Year allocations for Burrow and compare that to Eagles with Hurts.

Bengals added the void years for, what, spreading all of $9 mill further out? Why even do more than one void year for that amount?

That is not the cost for picks. The cap already has 51 figured in. Picks will only add to the cap to the extent they are more expensive than the guy they dispace from the roster, or are #52 & #53. 

The only pick that will potentially cost us any significant cap space is the #1, and that is a net of like $2 mil, if he displaces a vet/min type. If he allows us to waive a more costly guy (Volson, Stone, Pratt  etc) we will save.

Depends on the FA. 

Yeah, we have $20 mil. $23 if we cut Moss. 

But: 
1) Subtract $3-$4 mil for the PS 
2) Count #52 and #53 ($2+ mil) 
3) Count the cost of the #1 pick over the guy he displaces ($2 mil)
4) Count the cost of guys who are on IR (All at the moment, but that will grow). 

That is $8-$9 mil right there. And we never spend right to the cap, because the IR list will grow and we will need to sign replacements, and we will want a cushion. 

So, yeah, $20 mil for offseason figuring. But if you count what that will actually be come regular, it is more like $11-12. Or less.
