Duke Tobin On the Hot Seat?

The thing is, even if Mike Brown died and they did fire Duke who knows if someone else would be better and yes, I do like this last draft.

Shemar Stewart namely could be All Pro if used correctly, that A&M Defense didn't help him out all the while being the one player Offenses 
tried to take away all the time, constantly chipping and putting their best blockers on him. He still was extremely disruptive. Cannot wait to 
see how he performs with Trey being the one Offenses try and take away in a Defense that goes all out pass rush from the Ends.

Mixed feelings on Tobin. He has some strong suits such as his ability to draft WRs, TEs, even QBs. But he has struggled to consistently draft linemen. He doesn't seem to have changed his process or evolved much throughout the years. It doesn't sound like he's interested in adding more resources or doing anything at all differently. I get the impression that he and the Bengals organization view him in a far, far more flattering light than outsiders do. He has been pretty routinely outclassed by two teams just in the same division in terms of roster building. I get the impression that he or they may view events such as their QBs getting injured behind incomplete lines or certain prospects not working out as being "dumb luck" rather than a result of a disparity in skill. He has overseen the drafting of my alltime favorite players. He got some rosters pretty dang close in 2005, 2015, and 2022. But one has to point out that he has been employed for a long, long time despite never coming close to building a "dynasty." So I'd lean toward change sometime within the next century. Where you can find people who can draft like the Eagles or Chiefs or Ravens or Patriots I don't know. What I do know is this: continuity is a result of good results, not a pre-requisite. You don't fire a coach who consistently outclassed the competition. You don't go from having a lousy coach to having a great coach by employing him for 30 years.

Making vs missing the playoffs feels like a low bar, personally.
If they make playoffs but get bounced first round, does that justify keeping Tobin?
Just making it isn't good enough.

The one thing I can't put fault on Tobin though is trying to draw in FA talent.
The Blackburns handle all that contract negotiation and them and MB are strict on what they will and will not negotiate for outside FAs.
It's always possible Tobin said to get someone and they talked with them but the negotiations were just so off that the player went elsewhere.

Duke is definitely not on the hot seat.
My biggest problem with Duke is the jealousy I have towards him: he has lifetime job security to be in charge of the Cincinnati Bengals football team/roster.
If I could switch jobs with anyone he would probably be at the top of the list.

I don't expect this draft class to be like the '74 Steelers draft class and produce 4 HOFers, but I am optimistic for their future. Zac Taylor has settled in at HC, his opinion likely holds more sway with Duke and the ownership than it did early on. Zac saw that Defense and OL were problems, so he likely had a lot of influence on the new coaching hires. I'm going to give these new coaches on Defense and Peters with the OL the full benefit of the doubt that they'll be able to bring these new players along nicely as well as get a few of the existing younger players over the developmental hump, areas that both Pollack and Anarumo struggled mightily in.

There's a lot of potential with this draft class, the bigger question is can this new coaching staff get them there?
New DL coach to coach up Stewart
New OL coach to coach up Fairchild and Rivers
New LB coach to coach up Knight and Carter

We (and especially myself) are heavily influenced in our confidence in these guys because of the failures of the previous coaches not being able to elevate the talent.
Heck, maybe even current guys like Murphy and Volson actually improve too, giving more boost to this roster.

I'll be cautiously optimistic. That's about the best I can do lol.
