bfine Pre-Combine Mock
#1
Almost didn't get one in this year. Here are some guys I'll be looking at this weekend:

RD 1- SHILIQUE CALHOUN/DE/MSU (6’5” 251)
Long/lean DE. This guy is a natural bender that has displayed actual complex technique to get to the QB; not just speed or strength. Calhoun is not a player that is creating a lot of buzz, because he hasn’t “burst onto the scene” like many Johnny come lately’s, Shil has been doing it for 3 straight years. He is credited with 128 QB hurries, 26.5 sacks, and 51 TFL in the past 3 seasons, while showing steady improvement every year.
We use Shil as a pass rush specialist until he grows into his man muscles ad takes over RDE full time.
https://youtu.be/EO1aqFBalOQ

RD 2- RYAN KELLY/C/ALA (6’4” 311)
Ryan is not a stubby phone-booth Center. He is fluid, with good knee bend and smooth hips, He also has almost 34” arms, But Kelly’s game is not finesse, he blows holes open in the running game and moves quickly to the second level.
Many will turn on Kelly because he won’t lift the gym, but he has an anchor and hasn’t allowed a sack in 2 years.

RD 3-HASSAN RIDGEWAY/DT/UT (6’4” 315)
DT depth is sick in this draft and many suggest you can get 1st RD talent in the 3-4 RDs and Hassan is the best of the bunch. An injury this year, program down-trend, and talks of not always giving his all cause him to be available here. This guy is never on the ground and is virtually unmovable in the run game. But this doesn’t mean he cannot penetrate, Hasssan has 9.5 sacks in the last 2 years.
An NFL GM is on record as saying Hassan is more talented than former team mate Malcolm Brown and NFL.COM compares him to K.K. Short. GIMME

RD 4- DEMARCUS ROBINSON/WR/UF (6’1” 204)
Watch this guy play and ODB immediately come to mind. Athletic WR with dynamic vertical and blistering speed. There is a chance this guy is the star of the combine. Why is he available here? Because I throw better than most UF QBs and he has been suspended twice (no details).
DR is the prototypical Boom-Bust and well worth a 4th round flier.

RD 5- JOE SCHOBERT/LB/WISC (6’1” 247)
Joe was a walk on a WISC but don’t let that deter you. There’s currently a D-lineman playing for the Texans that was a walk on there. IMO Joe is the sleeper of the draft (subject to change). He has already showed the ability to get into the opponents backfield (9.5 sacks and 19.5 TFL this year), but Pat Kirwan watched him at the Senior Bowl practices and thinks he is a future star MLB due to his awareness and comfort “in the pit”.
Joe plays SAM this year and moves to MIKE when Rey is released next year.

RD 6- JONATHAN JONES/CB/AUB (5’8” 178)
[Image: 635498773369710108-102514AuburnVsSouthCarolina38.jpg]
This team has been too long without a J.Jo in the D backfield. J.Jo is little, fast, and of great character, If he does nothing more that cover AB twice a year he is worth the pick. Has 6 INTs in 20114

RD 7- KA'IMI FAIRBAIRN/PK/UCLA (5’11” 183)
If you think Ka’Imi might be hard to pronounce try saying his given name (Ka'iminoeauloameka'ikeokekumupa'a). I am tired of being jealous of the Raven’s kicker; I want a great kicker of our own. Ka is an incredibly accurate kicker that continues to kick the ball out of the end zone on kickoffs.  Ka’s balls get high quick (insert joke); he has never had a kick blocked.

The first three are some of my favorites in the entire draft.
I think that Shilique can be had in the second but that's just me.
Nice draft picks overall though!

Not a huge fan of the first two picks, don't know much about your DT, love everything else. Really like the Robinson pick, has his off-field issues, but he's flying under the radar from that and Florida's poor offense and lack of QB. Think he'll be a steal in this draft.

I like it except I don't think I'd take a DE in the first, especially if he's only a rotational guy.

I also don't like that you didn't address safety, so I'd just take one there if you wanted to keep the rest the same.

Robinson looked solid watching his games but he reminded me more of Jerome Simpson rather than OBJ to be honest, Don't mind the player but I'd probably wait a bit later.

Ridgeway looks solid, watched a few of his games doing my last mock and he showed some flashes but really wasn't overly impressive. I think the impact of losing Malcolm Brown who was a First round pick in 2015 had more impact than anything else on Ridgeway.

Not a big fan of the first 2 picks, Calhoun feels like a reach and I think Dodd is a more impressive prospect if they are set on going DE in round 1.

Was happy to see than Kelly weighed in a a sound 311. Bama had listed him lighter throughout the season

Talk is Robinson has top 4 WR talent. Interviews will be important

I think DE, especially an edge-rusher is an absolute need and Shaq has been consistently the best over the last 3 years. Hell Marvin may even line him up at SAM

The thing that scares me about Dodd is the project label. I want a proven commodity at DE in the draft,

Thanks too all for the feedback and I have the DVR set for this weekend.

I like it and I'm on board with going pass rusher early, we only have 2 in Dunlap and Atkins, we need pressure off of the other side. This draft coupled with a solid free agency could really put us over the top not too mention there are probably going to be a few gems to be had via UDFA

Believe it or not my favorite pick in this mock is the kicker. All were solid but he stuck out the most.

Pretty sure you can get Calhoun in 2nd.. I rather take someone like Billings, Lee, or Smith..

Also, I would take a WR in 2nd or 3rd and center later because Bodine is average..and average is good obviously.  :jk:

GREAT draft.   I've heard really good things about Ridgeway (that he's way under the radar).  I checked out a few U-Tubes on him and he holds the LOS really well - one of my prime goals.   You're right about Calhoun - he's been a producer - and we don't have a lot in the way of edge rushers.

I LOVE Joe Schobert.   The film I've watched on him is very impressive.  He knows where to be, sheds well, penetrates, is a good tackler, looked good in coverage and is a fine blitzer.  I'd seen 40 times anywhere from 4.7 to 4.86.   That will define where he is drafted.   But I think he would make an awesome SAM for us - possibly for all 3 downs.   I also like your idea of playing Calhoun at SAM.  This draft could open up some options for Guenther.

If the WR,CB and K are as advertised we will have addressed 90% of our needs.

Like this draft, but I live in Orlando and have plenty of gator buddies and they even think Demarcus Robinson is unreliable at the least. Pretty much they say he is a first class bonehead. No doubt he is talented though and a 4th rounder isn't too risky but we might really be needed a WR. I guess it depends on Marv J.

I'm stating to join you on that Kelly and Ridgeway train. Schobert would be sweet as well.

After combine thoughts:

RD 1: Shil was as advertised. 4.8 speed, smooth in workouts, solid 23 reps, Top 5 in vert, cone, and short shuttle.

RD 2: Kelly was solid and that is a bonus; as talk was he wouldn't test well, but is a gamer

RD 3-4: Did absolutely nothing. Ridgeway would still be a good 3rd RD pick, but I think a better DT prospect might be available here, Totally off the Robinson bandwagon. If you want to be a knucklehead, you better be talented. Robinson didn't show it.

RD 5: See comments on Kelly

RD 6: Fastest DB at the combine that put up the 3rd most reps on the bench, but short speed is terrible. Still we are talking 6th round.

RD 7: He's a kicker.

At first glance it's not a flashy mock, but after further review it is pretty darn solid and that's what she said.
I absolutely agree about DT depth in this draft. Perhaps a different DT or WR may make it better as you posted but both positions can be filled by different shoes easy enough. The base of it is sound, addressing needs.

If Kelly was there in the 2nd at this point I'd be jacked.  Still love Schobert.   I love the kicker pick if he's there.

They were talking on Path to the Draft last night that your boy Kelly could be this years Travis Frederick. A slightly unexpected first round center pick

I love this mock....

If the Bengals would sign Mike Wallace first. Then, it is 100% perfect :)
