Guys Marvin Isn't Going Anywhere
#1
C'mon guys, we have this discussion to absolutely no end when Marvin blows it as a head coach year after year. Whether its a tank of a season with players that doesn't warrant the record they produced or worse yet playing a great regular season only to show up in the playoffs with absolutely no preparation and execution at all against their opponents.

He's not going anywhere. This team can go 2-14 this year and every fan, media commentator, mother, father and sister can scream for a change in Cincinnati and all it will do is make Mike Brown dig his heels in like a 5 year old boy who refuses to share his toy with others and holds onto it with dear life.

It really is a loss cause when it comes to Lewis. Mike Brown's loyalty to Marvin isn't a testament but more of an admission of guilt of how damn lazy the front office is to put the work in to have a coaching staff that is competent enough to make this team win in the post season.

So if you need to post about Marvin to vent..go ahead...we've all earned it! If your posting to seriously ask who would be the next coach? Stop. Stop right now because your 1st grade child will graduate college and Marvin will still be leading the Bengals.

If a 4-12 season got him a two year extension, would 2-14 season get him a four year extension? Am I doing this math thing right?

I agree with you, Marvin is not going anywhere until he is ready to.  Some would point to the one year extensions as a sign that Mike Brown has him on some sort of notice, but I've always thought this is how Marvin wants it.  That he is probably not certain how much longer he wants to do this (he is getting up in age and certainly has enough money to enjoy the rest of his life).

I firmly agree with the bolded statement.  Mike Brown is not going to feel pressured into anything.  It is his way or the highway when it comes to this organization. I've always felt that doing things his way is the most important thing to him.  Winning and being respected around the league?  Sure, those things are great, but not nearly as important as having his say.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

So what, we have to hope for a scandal or something like that to get him out? Surely to God if this team doesn't make the playoffs this year, he has to be out!

I agree, he wants it that way in the point you mentioned above and I also think he uses it as leverage so he doesn't have a long term commitment and less say from day to day operations.

Its even become a big joke about Lewis not going anywhere. This weeks power rankings came out and this is the synopsis on the Bengals (ranked 8th btw)

"Marvin Lewis' Bengals are off to their worst five-game start since 2010, the season before QB Andy Dalton joined the team and the last time the Bengals missed the playoffs. The good news is if it continues, Lewis can't lose another playoff game (0-7)."

Exactly.  Mike Brown would rather have two consecutive 0-16 seasons than pay Marvin a couple million dollars to go away.  It's the same with Zampese.  I'm not sure how long his contract was, but we have him until it runs out.

I've said this same thing 100 times .... 101 now since I am saying it again.

Brown likes Lewis and he will leave when he decides to retire.

Marvin could not have another winning season as long as he lives and still be the Bengals HC 5 years after he dies.

It's not just Marvin.  Our new coaches all suck too.

Marvin will leave on his own terms. Marvin had an overall losing record after 2010. Lost 10 straight games in 2010, and was 2 years removed from another 4 win season. If he got an extension after that, imagine what he's going to get after 5 straight playoff appearances. Dude has a lifetime contract. The 1 year deals are probably to dupe the public into thinking there's some kind of "pressure" on Marvin, but it's obvious there is no such thing.

No accountability for the GM, no accountability for the HC, no accountability for position coaches (Sir Elton isn't going anywhere, even after this debacle), etc. That's the #1 problem with this franchise. There's never any accountability anywhere. Teams like the Pats and Steelers expect excellence, the Bengals (Mike Brown) expect to be "competitive...sometimes, and if not that's ok too".
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.

Yup, and I think it seeps all the way down through the organization.  It has to.  Players, and other coaches, aren't stupid.  When you look at the top, or the countless guys who have managed to stay on longer than they should, that sets a tone.  It permeates though the entire organization.

How can you demand the very best from a player when you don't demand the very best from your coach?  What example does it set when a guy like Brat stays employed?  What example does it when you so seldomly cut under-performing players.

You hit the nail on the head.  Other teams demand excellence.  The Broncos just did it last year when they fired John Fox after a stretch that saw: 13-3, 13-3, and 12-4, with a Superbowl appearance.  They canned Josh McDaniels after he went to the playoff in his very first season.  He didn't even make it all the way through year 2.  Look at what the Ravens did to Brian Billick, and look at what happened since.

When you keep a guy in place for 14 seasons without a playoff win it tell everyone who works for you something.  Whether they even realize it or not.  When you keep the same guys in place for decades, with no change, it speaks volumes.  There is no accountability or urgency with this team.  Their demands are lower than that of their peers.

Remember, this is the same head coach who, when asked about what he has to say to people frustrated by the lack of playoff success, replied "A lot of teams would be happy just to make the playoffs."

That tells me everything I need to know.  And honestly, if Marvin was any kind of man he would have resigned by this point.  If had any balls or faith in his ability he would have left and looked to start up elsewhere.  He and Mike are both equally comfortable with this arrangement.  It's worked out pretty good.  And here pretty good is excellent.

Absolutely this. What in the heck has the Bengals organisation ever done to suggest Marv is going anywhere until he quits himself? It just isn't happening, they love this man and are besotted by him for whatever reason. Maybe Stockholm Syndrome, I can't think of anything else.

What's funny is all the shit Bengal fans gave Carson Palmer shit for wanting out and being in a place that wants to win a Super Bowl. Imagine the frustration a player on the team who has spent his entire life to be the best player he can be and then put in a position knowing the owner wants to be competitive and not doing everything it takes to be the best of the best?

Marvin Lewis teams have NEVER been the best of the best... even in the very good years when playing against the best of the best his team failed miserably(aka playoffs, etc)

Last weekends game was a typical Marvin Lewis team. The best part was during his post game interview he said repeatedly "We did a lot of good things"  Really? Really? You play a game like that (if you can even call it that) and then have the balls to say "We did a lot of good things" ....yeah you can say that, but only in Cincinnati.

I thought it was pretty clear after 2010 that if you wanted to root for a team sans Marvin Lewis within the next decade you were going to have to look elsewhere.

If the wheels continue to fall off this year it should be Marvins last.

But there has been so much change this year that not positive it is all his fault.

Yet he is in charge, so it should fall onto him.

Yeah. Ravens offense is in the crapper and they fire their OC yesterday. Bills fire their OC 3 weeks ago (who probably didn't deserve it) and they haven't lost since.
