Cordarrelle Patterson - good bargain option?
#1
Cordarrelle Patterson reportedly was disgruntled with the Vikings while Norv Turner was their OC, as Patterson was essentially a bench player for nearly two years. However, once Pat Shurmur became the Vikings OC, Shurmur made a commitment to get Patterson the ball, but it could be too little too late since Patterson is about to his FA. Patterson has now been on record saying that he wants to go to a team that will treat him as a bigger part of the offense and not just a return specialist.

I've always kept an eye on Patterson since he was drafted by Minnesota in the first round. He was that raw prospect that was dynamic with the ball in his hands. Unfortunately, he hasn't really emerged as an established starter like everyone hoped. He's only put up 1316 rec yards and 7 rec TDs in 4 years. He's also had 4000+ KR yards and 5 KR TDs over that same span though. He's also only 25 years old, so he still has time to blossom into a true dynamic receiver.

Obviously, it would be absurd to think he deserves the money that more established WRs will get. But if the budget does end up being tight and the Bengals can only invest a few million into a WR, would you spend it on Patterson? If so, you'd have to be willing to give him opportunities as a receiver while also utilizing him as an all-pro returner.

I personally think that he could be a good yet risky option if the Bengals were looking in the bargain bin for receiver opposite of AJ Green with Boyd in the slot.

Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

If somebody could ever truly harness his enormous talent, he would be some weapon.  I remember we couldn't even slow him down the last time we played the Vikes.  He's fast as hell and hard to tackle.

And if there's any position coach on the Bengals I actually have faith in, it's Urban. Plus, the Bengals need more players who can get YAC and I think Patterson could do well in a more west coast style offense that can get him the ball earlier and let him make plays.

I doubt this guy is that cheap. Some team will probably offer him $4 million+ a year based on potential.

Would he be a RFA, should he not agree to the 5th year option?

According to overthecap.com, Cordarrelle Patterson will be a UFA.

You're a RFA if you're FA after your first three seasons. Patterson has been in the league 4 years.

Thanks guys, I couldn't remember how that worked.  But, to the premise of the OP, sure I think he'd be a worthy addition to the team.

I'd also use him on those running plays they used to have for Sanu.  He's electric with the ball in his hands.

Hell no.

All risk.  No reward.  He's too stupid to learn plays.  He's a one trick pony that thinks he Randy Moss.  Pass.

I think I read he wants to be a RB a la Ty Montgomery.

Cordarrelle (f that spelling) Patterson is basically Josh Cribbs. That's not to say that's a bad thing, but at least Josh Cribbs had the decency to not be delusional that he was going to be an All-Pro WR and RB.

I wouldn't want to spend WR money to bring him here, which is what he's likely looking for. Erickson is no Patterson in the return game, but he's also no Patterson in the distraction/ego department, either.

Cribbs could be a great comparison when all is said and done with Patterson. However, Cribbs did get a 3-year, $20 million contract extension with the Browns in 2010. Maybe Cribbs never spoke about getting a ton of opportunities on offense like Patterson has, but he sure got paid well to be an electric returner. Cribbs also saw the most action on offense during that contract extension when he had 292 rec yards and 1 rec TD in 2010 followed by 518 rec yards and 4 TD in 2011. Patterson has never reached 500 rec yards in a season, but has posted 384 yards or higher three times in four seasons. All decent for a WR3.

Since you brought up Cribbs, it does worry me now that a team might pay $5+ million a year to Patterson. If so, I definitely don't think the Bengals should do it. You're right, too much risk. But if it's only $3 million to sign Patterson and the likes of LaFell, Terrance Williams, Britt, Garcon, etc all go for $5 mill or higher, that's when I'd pull the trigger. A dynamic returner like Patterson that can contribute ~400 or more yards on offense is worth about $3 million a year IMO.

384 yards was good for a #3 WR in 1970, maybe.

That's awful for a #3 now in a league where 4,000 passing yards isn't much of a hurdle. I would take Garcon in a heartbeat, even at $5-6m/yr. 3yr/$15-18m and throw him out there as the #2.

Would also gladly offer Terrance Williams 4yr/$20-24m.

We need a receiver that can take the top off a D. Patterson cannot do that

We need Stills or Williams

I didn't mean to imply 384 yards was satisfactory for a WR3 in today's game. I was meaning more like 500+ yards can be satisfactory, which is what Patterson approached when seeing more opportunities on offense. Given Green and Eifert will occupy about 2000 yards of offense plus another ~250-500 receiving yards will be occupied by the RBs and depth players, I look/hope for the WR2 and WR3 to combine for around 1200-1400 yards.

I dunno, I still think that if Patterson can contribute around 500 yards or more on offense plus his added ability as a returner, I think he's worth a few million.

However, I too would like to see Terrance Williams opposite of AJ Green.

Patterson got 453 yards last year on 70 targets in 2013.
Boyd got 603 yards last year on 81 targets.
LaFell got 862 yards last year on 106 targets.

Patterson had 8.7 yards per reception last year.
Boyd had 11.2 yards per reception last year.
LaFell had 12.3 yards per reception last year.

Patterson isn't a good WR. He is a pretty terrible WR. The whole reason why he's talking about moving to RB (a significantly less paid, career shortening position) is because he isn't a good WR. Lol....

He's worth something as a returner, but I honestly think he hurts your team more than he helps if you're counting on him to catch passes.

Scanning the free agent list to find cheap guys that might intrigue the Bengals. At WR I'd love Marquess Wilson. Just dunno if he fits...
