I see what you're trying to do here by posting stats, but NFL.com's draft profile says he has a weak leg that can't kick it deep so those 210 touchbacks must all have been wind-assisted.

LOL. Simmons said during his press conference that he worked out Gonzalez, Elliott, and another kicker, and Elliott was chosen because he was superior in kickoffs. He also said Gonzalez has kicked mostly in climates like Arizona, and it's much different here. So those were his reasons for choosing Elliott. He also said Elliott is not a lock. He has to compete with Bullock.

I trust his judgment. Plus he said it's not a done deal. Elliott will compete with Bullock for the position.
Plus, there are other factors with being an NFL K. For all the concerns about his kickoffs, he never had one returned for a TD in college. He gets kicks off quickly, and has only had one blocked. He is 3 for 6 in successful onside kick attempts. Plus,he's not a guy who lets an early miss rattle him. How many times did we watch Nugent just completely implode?

Lol
A specialist picked before the 7th round is basically guaranteed a roster spot
I actually read up on him from someone who was a Memphis fan, and they said his misses in college were mostly on the outside hash, and they would have been NFL makes. So I'm assuming a lot of his kicks are pretty straightline

Good. Bullock has already let us down in a game.

I will say that the mental makeup of a kid is important and the person that brought up the OCD made a great point. Kicking is probably 90% mental in the NFL.
Pretty sure you're just kinda making this up. Gonzalea's numbers were nowhere near Aguayo's in college and was nowhere near as promising. This is why Aguayo went in the 2nd and Gonzalez went in the 7th.

A nice human story about Jake Elliott's background: http://www.nfl.com/videos/good-morning-football/0ap3000000800909/NFL-Draft-Stories-Jake-Elliott
Apparently, he got into football after taking part in a kicking competition at a high school pep rally!

Not necessarily. He makes that kick against the Texans, Bengals would probably have a totally different draft.

Keep in mind the college goal posts are ~6-8' WIDER than the NFL (making college kicking easier), the kicks are lower-pressure (and at Memphis he never played in any MAJOR games), and the block-rushing athletes are typically slower with less vertical ability.
The most disappointing pick thus far in the draft.
Also keep in mind he missed nothing at all under 30 yds (a BIG problem around here last year), and he hit 10, 50+ yd FG's in his career (another thing frequently missing around here). Oh, and there's the whole hash marks being wider in college, resulting in more angled kicks (which doesn't make them easier)

^^ THIS. Tempe is about 1,100 ft above sea level, and then there's the lack of humidity and the heat. All three factors play into how well a ball flies. They may not make a huge impact individually, but take all three together and a kicker from 1,100 ft in 85 degrees with 0 humidity will look much different at sea level, 35 degrees and rain/slush.

We cannot think like that. We can't go through our season thinking a win will hurt us in the draft!!!

The guy kicked a 52-yard field goal on the VERY FIRST year he ever played football - as a junior in high school.
Elliott kicked the fourth longest field goal in bowl game history. The kick was a 54 yarder extended the Tigers into a second overtime where they won the Miami Beach Bowl in double overtime, 55-48 (Who above said he had never kicked in pressure??????)
His longest in college play was a 56-yarder. His longest in practice was a 70 yarder!
PERFECT 202/202 on extra points....
I'm sold on this pick.

You guys are over dramatizing let's give the kid a chance before booing him off the roster... he can't be worse than nugent was last year and will be on a shorter leash plus he has to beat out bullock in preseason which hopefully he'll do

Too bad the Browns didn't sweep us, too. Damn Nugent for making that kick against the Jets! No wonder he was fired!
