The 1990s

Hands down was the greatest Decade ever for Music! I love that decade, our local radio station up here plays one hour of 90s every weekday Mon-Fri from Noon to 1 P.M. Listening to that brings back great memories of that decade, sometimes they go to a certain year like 1995 and play top 10 songs from that year in particular. Hearing bands like Garbage, Soul asylum and Folk Implosion really bring me back to much better days in our world and that great time period in general. You guys agree?

The 1990s had it's moments especially if you look at all genres. For instance I'd say the 90s were hip hop's glory years. Johnny Cash signing with American Recordings helped bring country back to its roots. Alternative and punk got pretty big.

It's really hard to argue against the 1970s for me though.

This.  The 90s were indeed the glory years for hip hop music.  The best that was ever put out in that genre.  However, for music overall, it 's hands down the 70s.  The blues, rock, country, even dance music was better then.

90's were awesome with the best variety of any era. Grunge, rap, alternate, modern country born, & rock were all booming. The late 60's and 70s were what they were with legendary bands and songs. But the variety wasn't nearly as good as the 90s, not by a mile.

Except all of that stuff existed in the eighties. Maybe not at its creative or popular peak yet, but it existed.

Hell, I'm not sure that the underground country and bluegrass right now isn't some of the best music ever. Colter Wall, Sturgill Simpson, Cody Jinks, Chris Knight, Steeldrivers, Ward Davis... Those guys are killing it right now.

Yeah, it's damn good, but nothing beats Waylon Jennings, Johnny Paycheck, Merle Haggard, Billy Joe Shaver, JD Crowe and the New South (which featured Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs back in the 70s), Flatt & Scruggs, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Dillards, etc. for country and bluegrass for me.  The problem today, Colter Wall, et.al are REAL country.....and they're calling it "underground".  It's a damn shame.

It really depends on what genre. If I am going overall, the 70's takes it for a lot of genres. I have to go 60's after that for spawning a lot of the 70's. For reasons listed above, the 90's served as a golden era for most modern music and saw Rock emerge reborn from the garbage that was most 80's rock. Still, the 80's was a stylistic divide from the 60's and 70's and they deserve a spot above the 2000's. The 2000's had some good folk/indie stuff and a new style of alt rock emerges. Still good hip hop. The 50's has the birth of RocknRoll

I remember, at the time, thinking 80's music kind of sucked.  But now, I don't know if it's just nostalgia, but I dig it.


Otherwise, for a little more objective criteria....any movie, or tv show, that wants to hit just the right vibe or mood usually goes to classic Motown or 70's.  Not going to get much 80's or 90's or 00's in there any less it's purely for time perspective.

Everybody's entitled to an opinion, but that's insane to say that the only good music in the 80s was Prince (a genius indeed), and SRV... For instance... Marvin Gaye. I know you like him. There are literally thousands of other examples. Iron Maiden, the Clash, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Commodores, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, Madonna, AC/DC, Cash, David Allen Coe, Paul Simon, Minor Threat, Fugazi, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, the Beastie Boys... All of them undeniably great, and active in the 1980s. That was just off the top of my head.
