So, how did filling the 1/4" gap turn out? I later thought of another good solution, but figured it was too late.

Either way it seems to me the matching grout caulk is the way to go.

That stuff is awesome.  When I was still doing tile, every shower corner, every bottom of a backsplash to a countertop in a kitchen, would preemptively get a bead of grout caulk.
