If only there were some way to project that Ced would struggle in the Pros...
#1
This was from his senior year...He also tore his ACL in his Bowl Game before we drafted him. Seemingly we thought we could make him better in the Pros than he was in college:

'The senior moved to left tackle for 2014. He got off to a strong start in the early portion of the year before hitting a slump. Versus Ole Miss, Ogbuehi was beaten for one sack and gave up a critical hit on Kenny Hill that helped result in a 75-yard pick six. Against Mississippi State, Ogbuehi had a disappointing game as he allowed three sacks. The outing against Alabama was the third-straight game in which Ogbuehi played poorly. He gave up two sacks and multiple other pressures and hits on his quarterback to the Crimson Tide.

Ogbuehi suffered a common problem in those sacks: He was getting in position perfectly, but couldn't sustain his blocks. The reason for his failures was a lack of strength. Sources said that Ogbuehi was playing with a back injury that prevented him from lifting weights, thus he was lacking strength. After that rough stretch, Ogbuehi finished the year playing better and moved around between right tackle to left tackle.'

Actual Bengals discussion when considering drafting Cedric Ogbuehi:
[Image: d4ea911c94ce83c060541c9595954047b64181a2...68ba68.jpg]
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Sorry for Party Rocking!

He was projected as a 1st or 2nd round pick by most all "experts". We weren't the only people who though the could overcome the issues. Had we taken him in the 2nd and Fisher in the 1st does that make it better? The reality is you expect guys drafted in the first couple rounds to eventually perform and they haven't.

To the "project that he would struggle" thing, every draft breakdown mentions negatives that give the scouts an out if they don't work out. There is never a clean prospect so this is kind of hindsight thing versus any way to really project if something would continue to be an issue into the pros.

This is all on Paul Alexander.

No doubt he was responsible for scouting and picking both of Fisher and Og and he missed on their potential and has not coached them up.

No other NFL team would even consider keeping Marv or Alexander given their record.

No major college team would keep Marv or Alexander given their record.

Only the Bengal management accepts this level of pathetic talent analysis and coaching.

Agreed. I'll admit I didn't necessarily hate either pick at the time, but I was a little peeved we took two offensive lineman early in that draft. The fact that they have been shit for us sucks but it's really the luck of the draw. Both were unanimously perceived as top offensive linemen in that draft. With Whitworth getting old and Smith seeming like he was going move on soon the picks actually made sense... They've just been a complete failure. Unfortunately. it happens.

Agree with this as well. If there's one thing our dips*** trio of MB, PA, and ML all have in common it's their pigheaded stubbornness. Not a single one of them can ever or will ever admit that they're wrong.

I'm not sure how likely it is but it very well may kill PA to admit he f***ed up with Ogbeuhi, Fisher and Bodine. Marv doesn't have the ballz to do anything about PA's horrific decisions and Mike is too busy sitting in his office with his thumb up his @$$ to fire any of his incompetent employees.

So the guy gave up a lot of sacks in college...but is really athletic and you think you can work with him. I kind of at some level get drafting him.

BUT

He also had a torn ACL that was going to cause him to miss most of his rookie year so you couldn't work with him. He also has strength issues caused by a bad back.

The red flags are astounding.

Ogbuehi was the perfect storm of "why the hell was he a first rounder"

His tape wasn't good.
His technique wasn't good.
He was hurt and couldn't work out fully.

but...

He was the third LT at TAMU in a row who got absurd unjust hype.
He was athletic (wildly overrated trait on the OL)
He had the size
Played in an offense that largely mitigated OL by design.

When you have a small scouting department or buy into college hype...this shit happens around the league.

He gave up a bunch of sacks in college. Sometimes 3 in one game as a senior. That's a major red flag.

Predraft hype that is basically just lobbied for by schools and coaches with connections is a real thing.

Nick Saban can basically sell and hype a kid into a round higher than he should go lol.

The draft hype machine is so weird.

I don't have a problem with the pick sometimes picks just don't work. With that being said how do you justify being ok with as a starter for this season when he showed he couldn't do it the year before. Think about this even we the Bengals benched him after 11 days. We never bench anyone especially a first round pick. We knew he couldn't play but yet we played him anyways because management was to stupid to franchise a HOF LT.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

The film on Og really wasn’t that good. Fisher had at least good film but an occasional penalty problem.

I think what really shocked me was selecting TWO OTs in the same draft, not just one.
And then I go back to saying "what if" on selecting:
Bud Dupree or Malcom Brown instead of Ogbuehi at 21 (DL covered then, as many of us were clamoring for)
Fisher or Ogbuehi in Round 2 - keep the same because it did make sense to get one OT
Kwon Alexander instead of Dawson with 3rd comp pick
Stefon Diggs instead of Hardison (groom as a replacement in case MLJ and/or Sanu left like they do with other rookie selections)
Ugh it's frustrating, especially because many of us were high on Dupree, Brown, Alexander, and Diggs so we would have made those decisions if it were us and it wouldn't have just been a hindsight is 20/20 thing.

Yep and we did not even need an OL that year. Needed DL the most.

Good pass rusher could have put us over the top.

But no we decide to build a great team that is close to breaking through to the other side and then draft for future instead of trying to win a SB.

Will never get this philosophy unless they already knew they were not going to re-sign Whit, Smith, and Zeitler already.

If that was the case though, would have still tried one last swing for the fence.

Yeah...I think the Bengals got overconfident when they made the playoffs 4-5 years in a row and started to get cute with their picks like the Patriots.

Most of our 1st Round picks were looking to replace guys that would want more money.

Eifert to replace Gresham - Fans expected some sort of Patriots like 2 TE system.
Kirkpatrick to replace Hall
Jackson to replace Jones
Ced/Fisher to replace Whitworth Lafell
Ross to replace AJ Green/Lafell (Green is a free agent in 2 years and 29 now)

Our drafting after AJ / Andy has sucked.... this year is starting to look pretty good tho as our 2 3 4 are very good and improving.  Lets see what Rosshurt can do when he gets back.

Do you know what's even better than all of this? That if Alexander the Great is here next year, guess who's still the starting LT? That's a real kick in the nuts.

2012 was a great draft and 2016 doesn't look like that bad of a draft either.

How do you figure that about 2016?

Will Jack: One good game, but does look promising if he avoids the stupid plays.
Boyd: Was a healthy scratch earlier.
Vigil: Looks very meh. Probably backup material, which is not good for a 3rd.
Billings: Hype fail.
Westerman: Inactive even on this horrid OL.
Core: Can't even run routes properly.
Fej: Looks like a decent backup, which is a solid result for a 7th rounder.

That is pretty bleh right there.
