Elise Jesse Wrote:Sources tell AllBengals that the team will move on from multiple assistants at the end of the season.
The organization began mulling big changes with the current coaching staff after the Bengals lost to the Dolphins in Week 13. At that time the team ranked near the bottom of the NFL in multiple categories including points scored (29th), rushing (30th), and total defense (26th).
League sources tell AllBengals that the Bengals' front office has been blunt and forthcoming in their conversations with Taylor as they evaluate the direction of the franchise. The second-year head coach is going to return for a third season, but there will be plenty of new faces on his staff.
The organization began having conversations about the future with their current staff this week.
...
The team has struggled in year two under Taylor. While four wins is an improvement from his two-win season in 2019, the front office wants this team to be further along in their rebuild in hopes of competing in the tough AFC North.
Key thing to note: Zac Taylor WILL be returning for a 3rd season, but the organization will force out multiple assistant coaches.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Turner better be number one on that list.
Outside of Turner and Lou what other assistant coaches need to be shown the door? Maybe Dufner?

If you're going to make that many major steps then just start all over again. This team needs a new start.

Duffner might be the new D coordinator if they move on from Lou.

I am a bit curious if they force him to hand over offensive playcalling to his OC so he can focus on HC duties.
Speaking of OC, will Callahan be kept? It's hard to say since we don't really know what he does if he's not calling plays.
IIRC, Al Golden is responsible for the pass rush, so I could see him leaving.
Turner almost assuredly has to leave.
Anarumo has been hot and cold, so I could see that being 50/50.

This needs to happen, but I'm a bit concerned who is going to elect to work under a HC with such a low win percentage who got his prior assistants to face the firing squad.

Didn't he fill in during the Washington game?
I'd really like this team to get an experienced D Coordinator.

Worth pointing out that while Callahan has 11 years of coaching experience, his only experience as OC is with Bengals starting last year.

I imagine people who are interested in potentially becoming HC would be interested in coming here, as they could see this as Taylor's last chance. And if he can't deliver in 2021, they could have an inside track to being HC in 2022.

This is why I want them to go get a D coordinator with some experience.
If year year results in them moving on from Taylor, would anyone feel comfortable with Callahan, Duffner or Simmons as the Head Coach?
I like Simmons, but there has to be a reason he hasn't moved on to a head coaching gig somewhere, pro or college. As for the other two, we'd be in the same situation now with a young inexperienced guy at the helm.

Don't know if he did or not.
I hope we get someone that can communicate well and not drive players mad.

Dan Quinn would be a nice get for a D Coordinator.

While this is good to hear, my concern is with the use of the words "assistant coaches" in the first sentence.
It give me the sad sinking feeling that Lou, who is a coordinator, not an assistant will be staying.

Quinn, Richard, Morris, or Bradley would be nice. Anybody with connections to Seattle would be nice.

It's funny...they have blunt conversations about jobs and they start winning.
If they're going to make major assistant changes...why not fire Taylor.

That's probably our best hope of getting anybody decent.
