2. I initially stated that Dalton finished top 15 in passer rating in 4 out of 5 years from 2012 to 2016. The reason I used this time frame is because - obviously - this was the prime of Dalton's career. 2017 to 2019 aren't included because we all know Dalton tailed off at the end of his career, as the team fell apart around him, and he got beaten up and aged.
You said Dalton was a "average to below average QB his entire career". So...I used that 5 year stretch to disprove that statement.
3. Exactly. How you feel about Dalton doesnt match reality. The stats and facts show a significant gap between Dalton and Fitzpatrick, and even most Dalton haters would admit he's better than Fitz.
4. We had elite starting WRs. Was Eifert really an elite TE? 615 yards in his best season, IIRC. Run game sucked, which you conveniently ignore. That's not elite, sorry dude. Not about fan clubs, it's about dealing in facts and reality.
It was good, but also vastly overrated.
There is no such thing of an objective measurement of QB performance. I wish there was. But all you can go off of is subjective characteristics like "clutch" and "composed. " 2 things Dalton never was and never will be. He could have been upgraded but we chose not to. That is my entire point. If you asked fans of the other 31 franchises if they would want Dalton as their QB when in his "prime years" almost all of them would say no. You call it the 'ol eye test but it has value that you're ignoring.
To the eyes, Dalton was average or worse his entire career, as agreed by the NFL experts, other fans and even a large portion of our fans. You can throw out statistics like how Dalton had a top 15 QB rating ignoring how many games he was garbage and how many stats he accumulated in garbage time if you'd like. Every success felt temporary with him because every time he "turned a corner" he almost immediately regressed, like clockwork. He had no elite QB characteristics so he always felt like a barrier to success rather than a gateway to success. He was inconsistent as well, only adding to the frustration.
All I know is I'm stoked that we finally have a QB we and the media have faith in. We never had that with Dalton so it's going to be a really good 5 to 10 years ( or longer) coming up as a Bengals fan.
