They were probably about the same all things considered.
I don't think they were about the same, but for the sake of argument, let's say they were. Palmer still suffered his injury 2 months later, and surgery was more primitive 15 years ago.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.
