Happens all the time.  Flacco is a great example.

'04 Steelers go 15-1 don't even make the Super Bowl.  Next season they start 7-5.  Win 4 in a row to get in as wild card.  Then win 4 in a row for the Lombardi.

The 16-0 Patriots lost the Super Bowl to a 10 win wildcard team.  Four years later a 13-3 Patriots team lost the Super Bowl to a 9 win wildcard team.
