You know that old carpentry saying? Measure twice, cut once? Measure 15 times, cut 14 times then start over.. 
You should use a story pole whenever you're going to cover any area where there are multiple measurements in a single line.. A story pole never lies, but individual measurements often do..
Personally I like using the Fastcap story pole tape measure.. Great tool to have..and cheap as dirt.
