Note there is nothing about 'surgery', just self identification.

There's a chance you have interacted with with a transgender or gender non-conforming person and didn't even realize it. Quote from the FiveThrityEight article "Most Americans Say They Don’t Know A Transgender Person — But Many Of Them Probably Do :
