I wish they would just extend the OT by one 10 minute quarter for regular season games. If you can hang onto the ball for 10 minutes and then kick a FG, great. Maybe each team scores 2 TD's and it's a shootout, but in the end it's a tie? Gives some possibilities, but doesn't prolong the game too much.
For the playoffs, I'd do a 10 minute quarter and then after that, it's sudden death with the first score wins.
I'm more for the fixed OT period like you see in basketball or baseball. Just my 2 cents.
