Picking Akili carried a massive opportunity cost, but I'll go with what started the Bungles era. We were smack dab in the middle of it by 1999. Who knows how those picks would have even panned out. The team was in quicksand by then and in need of a complete regime change imo.

For me, the Bungles started with the two Daves: Shula and Klingler. Shula was completely out of his depth, while Klingler amounted to zilch. Pair those two with a new owner and you had a troika of key roles suffering in the shadows of their predecessors: QB/Esiason, head coach/Wyche and owner/PB. In retrospect it seems like the ultimate recipe for losing, and the Bungles were born.
