I wasnt considering their skillsets just their careers. Vinny was an excellent backup and one of the best special teams players in the NFL. He was the Special Teams Captian and a team leader which are the qualities that Darrin Simmons who specifically asked for Battle noted when talking about him.

They didn't take a player in the 3rd because they though his ceiling was good special teams player. Simmons can ask for him but someone else had to sign off on him having starting potential to go there. To get elite specialists that early it takes a lot, to get a guy who is just covering kicks in a part of the game being phased out it may have had some sway but that was not the reason they took him.
