Pete Rose HBO Series
#1
Charlie Hustle And The Matter Of Pete Rose on HBO.  4 part series, each part 1 hour.

I have to say, I found it hard to watch.  They skip over many good memories and bring up things I would like to forget, and add new things I could have lived without.  It says Johnny Bench refused to be interviewed for this thing, and that is to Johnny Bench credit.  Tommy Helms is interviewed, but he hates it immediately and gives camera the finger, and continues only if they give him whisky to go on.  I assume Pete got paid by HBO, so that explains Pete doing it.  Watching Pete over 80 years old in a beauty salon chair getting what's left of his hair dyed black, I could have lived without seeing that.

One lie in this I fail to see the point.  Pete saying in a modern interview he never went to Golds Gym, and HBO showing old interviews where Pete says he loves going to Golds Gym.  Pete can double talk as well as he could switch hit, but his endless double talk in this gave me Excedrin Headache number 14.

I have good memories of Pete Rose.  This HBO thing is not one of them.  Such as them filming Pete betting on the Bengals Super Bowl against Rams, and then Pete comments how Burrow not a winner.  Pete doesn't mention the no blocking for Burrow in the 4th quarter, or the game played in Rams home stadium, or all Burrow did just to get Bengals to Super Bowl.   No, the special shows Pete losing yet another bet, and then his mouth about Burrow.

I loved Reds Hall of Fame able to have Pete Rose Day, and the next year his statue ceremony.  His number 14 up, and his statue.  I will remember that.  I think this HBO thing hurts Pete more than helps Pete, but I'm sure HBO paid Pete and Pete will do just about anything for a buck. That's one thing we learn as we watch Pete selling his autograph to kids all through this, and Pete paid to place the first bet at a new casino.  This HBO special tarnishes my good memories of Pete, so I wish I hadn't seen it.  Not in the HBO special is the good memory of Pete in a World Series, and two Phillies are dropping the ball, and Pete backing up the play catches the ball before it hit's the ground, living up to Charlie Hustle.  I still have good memories of Pete, this HBO special is not one of them.
