The rule has never worked like that though, Harley. You have to maintain possession through the ground. This has been a thing for years, and are why this list of plays are not touchdowns.
It's not a freeze frame, play over situation. The receiver has to control it through the ground. Gesicki did not, so it wasn't a catch.
