It was said repeatedly throughout the contract drama in the preseason that Chase would never be cheaper than he was then. That's a fact, and now we are looking at the consequences of not extending him then and there. He's absolutely balling out right now. The offense, despite the team's record, is borderline elite. Maybe not so borderline. Burrow is peak Burrow.
The likelihood of Chase winning big after betting on himself is incredibly high right now. The team has no choice but to pay him what he wants, which is more than it was 5 weeks ago or have him hold out and show his ass.
This was a dumb move and will be judged as an unforced error by the organization. At the time, I thought Chase was being greedy, but the joke guarantees are not up to par with what a player of his caliber should expect.
