Ex. original play might call for a 15 yd out route, audible might change that to a 7 yd out, etc. Those are the things that second year players get tuned into on that first full year of offseason activities.
It's also so much about selling routes to defenders, adjusting as you allude to, body position between the ball and defender, high-pointing the ball, just an overall chemistry that needs to develop, getting off man/press and, naturally, blocking and being a willing blocker which are two different things both on passing and running plays.
