The teams that are more successful on the field tend to receive more money from the league. This is because they are more likely to sell more tickets, merchandise, therefore, broadcast rights. If said tickets, merch, etc. suffer a significant enough hit, that factors in -- especially to billionaires, who want to stay that way, by keeping all available revenue streams open.
