It should have been obvious that the Bengals loaded up on defensive free agents that offseason as a short term fix to support their young offense, and allow time to draft and develop defensive players in house. The plan was to keep the nucleus of the high powered offense together with big contracts and allow the defense to survive without a steady infusion of big free agent money each year. They failed, hardly any of those defensive picks have developed into anything worth granting a second contract to. The holes are still there, and as the bills for the offensive talent are coming due, the defense still can't stand on it's own two feet.
Anarumo was trusted with not only utilizing the outside talent brought in, but also with development of young drafted players. He blew it. Time to get his ass out of town. Sure, many of us would like to see Duke go with him, but I think that we're all smart enough to know that isn't likely to happen. Who in the hell that is better at Dukes job than Duke is would be willing to come and work a not-actual "GM" role with all of the heavy handed oversight and financial constraints that the Bengals management make Duke operate under??
Thinking that a 4th rd bust and an undrafted free agent can replace a top 5 player at his position is laughable.
