Why don't HC's go on the open market? You've never seen a HC turn down an extension to test Free Agency.
Coaching is what wins in the nfl.
If you pair an elite qb with an elite coach that will win more often than not.
Bengals have an elite qb, but they lack the elite game planning of an elite coach.
They also lack a defense and decisive vision for said defense (identity/scheme).
If you look at teams like the chiefs and eagles, their defenses weren’t good enough and their coaches/GM made the right picks in the draft to build a defense. They loaded up on pass rush and coverage. They backed up the defense with great game planning and game management to win more often than not in close games.
Meanwhile the bengals tend to shell up on offense in the clutch/playoffs against elite teams in crucial moments.
Bengals could have won when they made the Super Bowl and afc championship a couple years ago if their offense could close out the game—but they got outcoached in the clutch moments.
They’ve gotten outcoached in clutch moments this year too.
Bengals keep wiffing on defense in the draft.
They have punted drafting a legit corner since Zac got here.
They picked up a couple mid DTs in FA to replace an aging Reader.
Chiefs drafted later than the bengals and still drafted better to set up these last 3 years. They were up against the salary cap just like us but hit on their picks.
I brought this up before this draft and the prior one as well.
Bengals need a great draft on defense to set up a Super Bowl window.
Their coaching needs to improve as well.
Part of coaching is drafting, development, and game planning/management.
Zac has had some moments where we won some close games.
Overall we keep coming up short and it’s a case of the coaches and the organization wiffing on draft picks and not getting us into the right plays in the clutch situations to win games.
