Also don't see Hudson back.
We will go into next year with:
- All
- Sample
- MacLachlan
Those are the guarantees. Don't think Grandy will be around either, but you never know.
And I will actually say that we DO need 5, because the position is now used so much in our scheme, we've had 4 TEs on the active gameday roster for nearly 2 full seasons now and 4 on the 53 for almost 3 full seasons now: it's a position we use fairly frequently.
I think everyone should be very concerned if they can't sign a very productive player who won't break the bank, a player that Burrow has built a great relationship with in the locker room, in the huddle and after the ball is snapped. Sample is solid but he can't catch a ball more than 7-8 yards downfield and cannot extend a defense, All is injury prone and has been thru-out his collegiate career and already as a rookie and MacLachlan has done absolutely nothing thus far, albeit, not necessarily totally falling on him. Really good teams on this league use multiple (as in at least 2-3) TE's that can lineup on the LOS, can flex and that can go get the ball.
Nobody should ever assume that trust and chemistry between a QB and receiver is something that just happens. Takes a whole bunch of work and luck. I wish I could count all the people on this site that demanded that Burton should be playing..lol. "Just send him deep" or "WTF is wrong with Taylor for not playing him" or "It can't hurt to play him a handful of plays", etc. etc.
In a league that requires a position to have a pretty large dose of innate sense, incredible timing and trust with their QB and the ability to lose their man and not just by running by him by by applying plenty of strategy that comes with dozens of hours of video study, when you have that player and the means to keep him then you do it.
