I don't think the only logic is replace him with a guard, why not replace him with a DT or DE ?  Last year 8 out of 10 top offense in yards a game made the playoffs, Falcons and Bengals did not with Higgins.  Of the bottom 10 defense, none made the playoffs, i could see the argument it is more important to go replace him with a defense starter or offense starter.
