No doubt they wanted him gone as that is a huge amount of dead $/cap space to give up but it also helps them free up cash for Purdy. Not even sure Purdy will be worth it in the end but time will tell.

If I understand it correctly Samuel was due a 15 million option bonus on March 22nd this year.  So San Francisco saves that in cap space. So include his 1 million + salary, the 750k per game bonus and 200k workout bonus they save 17 million actual cash. But they end up with so much dead money because of all the prorated stuff they pushed into future years.  Because the trade occurred before June 1 all that is accelerated into this year.  

On the other end it looks like Washington is paying his salary which looks like it includes that 15 million option bonus, the 1 million + base salary, the 750k per game bonus and 200k workout bonus.

That's the best I can sort it out.  I could very well be wrong on some points because all these numbers, different types of bonuses and all the accounting stuff can be rather confusing.
