The 49ers are taking a $31m cap hit because of the trade (Commanders have a $15.8m cap hit). That's the downside/risk of the void years.
But the free up cap space for THIS year, which is what they need in order to give Purdy the contract that he needs. However, you make a good point about the cost of void years when things don't go as planned. For every person saying the Bengals should venture into the void year territory, there are plenty of examples for the management to point to as reasons they don't want to.
