Thing is, they do need a TE. There's only about 10-12 legitimate 1st round prospects this year, and Loveland is one of those. While I think most would like for the BPA to be a defender, I don't think it's wise to pass on a 1st round talent at a position of need to take a 2nd round talent at a position of greater need. When you start spending your high picks based on need instead of talent, the overall talent level of your team declines
If they get Trey's extension done, we also need to realize that the window is wide open once again. They will have all their cornerstone pieces locked up long term. They won't be in a position where the window is closing due to expiring contracts and would feel a need to force a pick to fill a hole in the depth chart to compete short term.
That said, pass rush is the club's overall biggest weakness, and having four picks in the Top 81 and not getting one until the 4th is a big disappointment. Bech is a real head scratcher of a pick. If you're taking Loveland after reupping Gesicki, then you're moving a more towards 12 base, which they did move somewhat more towards last year. With Chase, Tee, Brown, Gesicki, and Loveland added, it's hard for me to put WR3 over a pass rusher at this point in the class. Ratledge, if they don't address G in FA, sure, as the value is also there. Watts, I don't mind the player, and the value is good, but I also feel that if the pass rush improves, the secondary will play a lot better. There's usually pass rushers available in that spot I have higher on my board, as well.
