Ashcraft should try getting an ERA below 4.75 for the first time in his career before he even begins to worry about trying to become the closer.
Last year the league average relief pitcher (all of them, not just closers) had a 3.97 ERA. Ashcraft has a career 4.91 ERA. Heck, while spring training stats don't really matter a ton as far as what a player will do in the regular season, he had a 5.51 ERA this spring.
