The OP thought process has some merit. If the offense will likely score 30+ points, then 2 things have to happen with the defense. Great run defense on 1st and 2nd down so teams can't keep our offense on the field. The 2nd is a ferocious pass rush that can be generated with only 4 guys in 3rd and long or when teams have to pass to catch up.

Sadly our defense could do neither last year, maybe that is why our defense lost us at least 5 games.
