Using Deshaun Watson as an example again, the Cleveland fans were stuck having to support that type of QB play year after year. Imagine if it were the Bengals that gave Watson a huge guaranteed contract. Would that be good for Bengals fans especially when their tax dollars pay for the stadium plus all the other money the NFL and the teams generate because of those very fans. Fully guaranteed contracts like MLB are just a bad idea.
Poor contract decisions happen with teams all the time.
It may be bad for CLE, but it's not bad for the fans of 31 other teams.
Any team should have to go through down times if they make poor contract decisions, even today.
What I am specifically getting at is fully guaranteed contracts would (or should) reduce the amount of talent a single team can have unless they draft well or can find value FAs. They wouldn't be able to sign a plethora of expensive veterans who stack the team, thus resulting in some of those guys signing elsewhere, causing more parity in the league.
The big reason baseball suffers is because of no salary cap. Those wealthy teams like the Yankees and Dodgers are happy to pay the luxury tax because it's basically a joke.
If there was a baseball salary cap, I guarantee either we'd see smaller contracts for the mega stars, but also not always see teams like the Dodgers and Yankees in the postseason.
I want to see the small market teams far more often than they typically happen.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.
