What Are you Playing Now & General Game Discussions

I bought Bases Loaded 2 on the NES for 39.99 back in 1992.  The price stuck with me cause I charged 1 dollar a lawn on base and when I cut 40 lawns and went to the store my dad (drill sergeant at the time) gave me a hard time for not factoring in tax.

Anyways, according to chatgpt, that game would be 79.58 today, so it seems relatively fair I think.

And that game came complete, with no Day-1 patches needed, no online-connectivity needed. You could also loan it to friends and when you got tired of it you could sell it to put it on the used market. Or you could wait and buy it on the used market for a heavily discounted amount.

The physical manufacturing process was also much more expensive, the global shipping process was much more expensive, they relied on physical brick-and-mortar stores to sell the games because digital games (where they just have to copy files endlessly for free) didn't exist.

The market sized was also fractional so they needed to make their money from a smaller amount of large sales rather than modern times where you can make a ton of medium sized sales and still come out ahead. Tetris is the best selling NES game that was never bundled with the console at 8m sales in his lifetime. Mario Kart Deluxe 8 sold 67.35m copies on the Switch.

Nintendo is NOT getting hurt by inflation. This is just them seeing a record amount of profit roll in and thinking "hey, I bet people would give us even MORE money".

Side note, were you paying for the gas in 1992 when you mowed lawns? Because it looks like the national average gas price in 1992 was $1.13 per gallon. So cutting lawns at $1 per lawn seems like if you were you were either making just a couple pennies per lawn in profit, or you were losing money, depending on the lawn size and your mower's gallons per acre.
