I understand as fans we only have the time we see these players play in meaniful games. But the coaching staff sees them in practice over and over again. It is also their main job to develop players. I am advocating for a huge upgrade at safety, I see 2 possibly round 1 picks and a 3rd, maybe in early round 2. I am fine to draft one with pick 17. But I am also am not dismissing our 2nd year safety or our 3th year safety who was great on special teams one year after ACL surgery.
Only the FO and coaches know who on our current roster is in need of an upgrade. The draft will add a piece to the puzzle as it tells us their short and long term concerns by who they draft.
This is 100% my take on the position coaches. A position coach is like a 1st line manager, at least at my company. They aren't really getting hands-on, but they have experience doing the role they are coaching and help teach and guide the individuals in their space.
I don't think it's the coordinators' primary job however to develop players. It's their job to put together an offense or defense that works with the players they have and able to adjust based on the opponent week-to-week. I see a coordinator's job like what a director is responsible for at most companies.
The HC honestly to me is more like a VP. They're technically there overseeing everything, but they're not usually technically experienced enough over the entire set of folks who report to them, so they put trust in the directors and managers to (help) set the vision and develop the talent. The VP will have some key decision-making responsibilities though and typically be the one looked at as responsible for the failure of those who report to them if results aren't met.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. Ended 9-8 but barely missed playoffs
Changes needed to do better in Sept/Oct moving forward.
