We have the $$ to sign a G in FA right now. Plus, if we did, we could cut Volson and Moss to recoup the money. Your argument does not hold water.
And while I tend to agree with your overall point at 17, that a rotational DT probably is not the best use of that pick, it isn't a HORRIBLE use either. I like Harmon and Nolen's ceiling is REALLY high.
When you throw in the facts that:
1) the S/LB choices might be slight reaches at #17 (Starks, Emmanwori, J. Campbell),
2) ditto G (Booker, Jackson, Zabel),
3) that there are no true DEs without flags worthy of the pick (Stewart), AND
4) we don't really use OLB/Edge types in our scheme (Green would ALSO be a situational guy)
We are either gonna have to:
1) Reach slightly for plug & play starter at a needed, but nit premium position: (G: Booker, Zabel, Jackson, SS Emmanwori, FS Starks, LB Campbell), OR
2) Take a pass rush guy (DT/OLB) who isn't likely to start, OR
3) Try and trade down, OR
4) Hipe a super blue chipper falls on our lap, OR
5) Go in a different direction entirely (OT, CB , RB , TE)
